Leading clubs and committees keeps MBA students involved

The Notre Dame MBA Association, or MBAA, offers students countless opportunities to get involved and further their education. According to MBA student Jon Peach, the MBAA is "the central organizing hub on campus," serving as a liaison between the faculty and the MBA students. In one way or another, all of the clubs and committees on campus lead back to the MBA Association.

A popular club on campus, the Finance and Investment Club meets twice weekly. On Wednesdays during lunch, special speakers from the investment community expose the students to everything from investment banking to corporate finance, while also offering networking opportunities and direction in determining career paths. On Thursdays, the club meets over lunch to manage a $300K portion of the university's endowment. Club members learn fundamental valuation techniques while managing the holdings in the portfolio. This year the club sponsored two trips: one to meet Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway in Omaha and one to visit 10 investment banks on Wall Street.

Another club, the Irish Leaders, is dedicated to providing students with opportunities to interact with the country's top business leaders, sharing leadership styles and experiences. Through these interactions, the Irish Leaders has found that students are able to fine-tune their own leadership style, while improving their networking arsenal. Last fall, the club invited best-selling author and networking guru Harvey Mackay, considered one of the world's top five speakers by Toastmasters International, to the campus. He spoke on getting a foot in the door and working opportunities to one's advantage. This year's third annual Notre Dame Leadership Conference, hosted by Irish Leaders and organized entirely by student leaders, will feature dynamic speakers and break-out sessions devoted to enhancing leadership principles.

At the end of the day, the clubs (Hispanic MBAs, Consulting, Marketing, Finance, etc.) and committees (student activities, career development, etc.) allow the MBA student to get involved and make a contribution to the University of Notre Dame, known for its responsiveness to student feedback and interest. The challenge, according to Jon Peach, is "how to take a great place like Notre Dame, and make it better."
