Unravel Tough Business Problems
With an MBA, in addition to seeking personal growth and career advancement, you are also likely looking to influence an organization—contributing and building at a greater level than ever before. Our recruiters in these organizations have similar aspirations for you. They are looking for difference-makers. Last year, we asked our recruiters what they value most in any MBA graduate. The study showed out of 11 attributes measured, the ability to solve problems was most highly sought.
That’s no surprise to us. We’ve built our curriculum around providing you with the knowledge, skills and opportunities to grow as a leader who can solve the toughest of business problems. We believe there are four dimensions that prepare you for this challenge: an integrated mind, broad perspective, tenacity and heart. Read more about this uniquely Notre Dame approach below.
integrated mind
First, a leader must have an integrated mind. He or she must have a balanced mastery of all functional areas of business—from finance to accounting, and from marketing to management. The leader must be able to discern the implications of a problem—and its solution—organizationwide. Through signature courses in Problem-Solving and Innovation, we give our students the tools necessary to diagnose problems, understand the critical, diverse business issues, and frame solutions recognizing implementation needs and impending obstacles.
broad perspective
Second, a leader must have broad perspective. Through an orchestrated series of engagements with leaders worldwide, our students’ eyes are opened to the complexities of business. Students explore problems and opportunities in our communities, our organizations and in global business. From rich dialogue during immersions in Asia, Latin America and Europe, to an exploration of what the next decade holds during our Ten Years Hence series, our students emerge more thoughtful and visionary in their pursuit to solve problems.
heart
Third, a leader must have heart. We invite our students to develop an explicit awareness of their core values and how these values should guide solutions to problems. Our students are provided opportunities to strengthen their communities by sharing their new problem-solving skills and fostering entrepreneurship with businesspeople eager for our help in Jamaica, Mexico, Africa and here in the Midwest.
tenacity
And finally, a leader must have tenacity. No problem is solved until that solution is brought to life. He or she must be an accomplished communicator, motivator and mobilizer. Our students have many opportunities to put their newfound skills to work on real-life problems for large organizations. During “Live Cases,” organizational executives bring us a tough problem. Our students then apply problem-solving frameworks, develop the solution and recommend implementation strategies. How can supply chain help turn around a company? How can the newest technological innovation best be brought to market? Our students are helping shape business strategy for organizations such as GE, HP and OfficeMax.
