Andrew Sommese is doing research in numerical algebraic geometry. This subject, which is to algebraic geometry what numerical linear algebra is to linear algebra, uses numerical analysis to investigate the solution sets of polynomial systems. Sommese's main motivation is to solve the polynomial systems arising in engineering and science.
