Robert Lumpkins Instructorship in Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics of the University of Notre Dame invites applications from recent doctorates for the position of Robert Lumpkins Instructor in Mathematics. Candidates in any specialty compatible with the research interests of the department will be considered. The teaching load and salary will be competitive with those of distinguished instructorships at other AMS Group I universities. This position is for a term of three years beginning August 22, 2009; it is not renewable and is not tenure track. Applications, including a curriculum vitae and a completed AMS standard cover sheet, should be filed through MathJobs (www.MathJobs.org). Applicants should also arrange for at least three letters of recommendation to be submitted through the MathJobs system. These letters should address the applicant's research accomplishments and supply evidence that the applicant has the ability to communicate articulately and teach effectively. Notre Dame is an equal opportunity employer, and we particularly welcome applications from women and minority candidates. The evaluation of candidates will begin December 1, 2008.

Postdoctoral Position
Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Biocomplexity, University of Notre Dame

Title of the Project: Multiscale modeling of the blood clot formation.

Description: Following a rupture in blood vessels, components in blood and the vessel wall interact rapidly to form a thrombus (clot) to limit hemorrhage. This hemostatic response is rapid and regulated, since excessive and inappropriate clotting can occlude blood flow through the vessel. The biomedical importance of these reactions is underscored by the severe and lethal consequences resulting from failure and disregulation of the hemostatic system.

The overall goal of this NSF/NIH funded project is to develop a 3-dimensional model and a computational toolkit for simulating thrombus formation. Computational tools will be validated with specifically designed experiments to test predictions of thrombus development, structure and stability. This position is a part of research collaboration between University of Notre Dame and Indianan University School of Medicine.

Requirements: A PhD in Applied Mathematics, Computational Physics, Chemistry or Material Science is required. Applicants should have a strong background in computational methods and parallelization algorithms for Monte Carlo simulations. Any knowledge in sensitivity analysis, mathematical modeling, stochastic PDE, uncertainty quantification and statistical physics is a definite asset.

Location: University of Notre Dame
Duration: One year with possible extension to up to three years
Starting Date: end of September 2008

If interested, please send your current CV including a list of publications, research statement and contact information for three references to Dr. Mark Alber via e-mail: malber@nd.edu
