Why pursue graduate studies at Notre Dame?

The Mathematics Department of Notre Dame is highly rated, with researchers working in many areas of algebra, analysis, geometry, dynamical systems, topology, logic, applied mathematics and mathematical physics. Our faculty is committed not only to excellence in research but also to providing a congenial and nurturing environment for our graduate students which, like our faculty, come from all parts of the world.

The recent appointments of two very distinguished endowed professors have added to the prestige of our department. Prof. F. Ledrappier, formerly with Ecole Polytechnique and CNRS in France, is a renowned specialist in dynamical systems, ergodic theory and differential geometry. Prof. I. M. Sigal, from the University of Toronto, is a world leader in Mathematical Physics. Besides their steller research accomplishments they have also advised many doctoral students.

Two other exciting initiatives must be mentioned. We have recently formalized a joint PhD program with the Philosophy department, in the subjects of Logic and Foundations of Mathematics. Secondly, we are in the process of tailoring our course requirements to reflect the specific needs of our vibrant and diverse applied mathematics group.

Upon acceptance in our program, the student is typically offered a tuition scholarship, together with a Graduate Assistantship in the amount of $17,500. This level of support is maintained for up to five years as long as the student is making normal academic progress. An important component of our financial assistance package is the fact that there are no teaching duties in the first year. In subsequent years there is a maximum tutoring, teaching and grading of about ten hours per week.

Besides the many specialized weekly seminars, we run a seminar devoted exclusively to first-year graduate students where faculty members give short presentations of their research. This makes the process of choosing a research area easier and more enjoyable. Once a choice has been made, the advisor will help bring the student to the forefront of research in his/her chosen field.

Two years ago the Math department moved into a newly renovated building, Hurley/Hayes-Healy Halls, right in the heart of our beautiful campus. It is a very modern facility with plenty of office space for faculty and students. We would love for one of those offices to have your name on it!
