Eucharistic Adoration at the University of Notre Dame

"O Holy angels, make me see God on the altar as you see Him in heaven,"

          - Blessed Brother Andre

When and Where?

What is Eucharistic Adoration?

Eucharistic Adoration is the adoration of Jesus Christ who is present, body, soul, and divinty, in the Holy Eucharist. The consecrated Host is displayed in a special holder called a  monstrance, and people come to pray and worship Jesus continually throughout the day and often the night.  In order to have Eucharistic Adoration people sign up to be with the Blessed Sacrament for segments a half-hour or more since two people must be present at all times.  Naturally, anyone is invited to come and visit Jesus without having an appointment, and many do.

What am I supposed to do during Eucharistic Adoration?

Pray in whatever way you are most comfortable praying, but quietly.  This may include silent meditation, the rosary, journaling, or spiritual reading.

What ND and SMC students are saying about
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

I just remember the first time that I went to adoration.  I remember seeing Jesus right there in front of me, just being overwhelmed and filled with the spirit of joy and happiness that I could be there in front of God who sacrificed himself for me.  I felt blessed that I could be in front of him and pray to him and worship him and honor him.
-Anne Klinkhammer

What is adoration, anyway?

Adoration is a beautiful type of prayer because the whole setting is conducive to really getting to know and to love Jesus as your God and as your friend.  They put the Eucharist in the monstrance, they put it on the altar, and they decorate it.  It’s a very quiet setting with just you and Jesus in the Eucharist, right in front of you in utter silence…
-Dan Matejek

It’s like nothing and everything at the same time. It’s nothing because He’s under the appearance of a tiny little wafer of bread. It’s everything because of who He is.  He is the God of everything and of all time.
-Jen Barchie

It’s a foretaste of heaven.
-Megan Cockley

It is the ultimate reality.
-Mary Tarsha

What do people do while they are there?

Spiritual Reading…

I love adoration because I know I’m there with all the other friends of Jesus just loving Him… every time he brings me something new either through scripture or through another spiritual reading that he really wants to speak to me through that day.
-Mary Simonis

Refocus…

What I very much enjoy about having adoration on campus is being able to go at anytime during the day on Tuesday to adore Christ.  It’s a wonderful, very quiet place that I can hang out with Jesus and be able to tell Him everything about my day or problems and get refocused and recentered in the middle of a crazy schedule.
-Luis Matos

God gives me all the grace I need to get through my day and my week. I know that by the amount of time I sow in front of the Blessed Sacrament I reap so much more time throughout the week to do other things such as homework and anything else that God desires in my life.

-Matt Reisenauer

Rest in God…

Thoughout my week my time seems to be filled and distracted and my heart and my soul as well, so I enjoy going to my time in adoration and just letting my heart rest.  I just look at Jesus and he looks at me.
-Stephen Sanchez

Eucharistic adoration is for me a time when Jesus takes me out into the desert and speaks to my heart.  He makes it clear to me that he made me for himself and my heart’s restless till I rest in him, as St. Augustine put it.
-Monica Mata

Spend time with their Best Friend…

I look forward to it all week because it’s a time when Jesus and I can sit and have a conversation. I can bring before Him everything that’s on my mind, not that he doesn’t already know it but that I can at least talk to Him about it and sit there and also listen to anything that he wants to tell me.  It’s a great time to have a conversation with Jesus and to build our friendship because any friendship needs conversation and communication.
-Liza Villaruz

Begin to understand Love…

What I think of is that we are all striving after love so much of the time.  Most Catholics will recognize that Jesus is the fullest embodiment of love; I find that in adoration I am most able to be still and adore Him, to receive His love and be filled with it.  When I’m at adoration I know what that word that there’s so much confusion about these days means, love.
-Courtney White

And feel His gaze…

When I go to adoration I think of the verse about the rich man when it says, “Jesus looked at him and loved him.” I go to adoration and I think of Jesus gazing upon me and loving me and even if I haven’t yet learned to meet His gaze, I know that He will still be there, looking at me and loving me.
-Jenny Leary

I love to sense his smile when I walk into the chapel.

But what happens when you have to leave?

I always leave with God’s promise in my heart that He is with me always.
