This network is sponsored by the National Science Foundation through the Special Algebra Meetings in the Midwest grant (NSF DMS-0753127).

Our goal is to create strong interactions among a sizeable number of established centers in algebraic geometry and in commutative algebra that are located in the Midwest, within a 150 mile radius. Primarily, this goal will be achieved by promoting a series of bi-annual rotating conferences and by supporting the mobility of graduate students, junior faculty members and visitors.

The centers involved in this initiative are located at Purdue University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Notre Dame. However, we hope that other institutions in the area will possibly be involved in these activities.

The various research groups listed above have compatible interests, but at the same time complementary expertise, and collaborations are already ongoing. We plan to foster fruitful exchanges of ideas by means of a regular series of meetings. There is already a long tradition of such conferences which have been generously supported by the NSF and other federally funded agencies: Purdue (1984, 1986, 2004, 2006), Michigan (1989), Missouri (1991, 1993), Notre Dame (1997, 2005), Kentucky (2003), Chicago (2007).

We also aim to promote the mobility of Midwest graduate students and junior researchers belonging to any of these institutions and interested in algebra. This second goal of ours will be achieved by supporting short term visits (two or three week long stays) for young mathematicians to work with the research groups at other institutions in the area. These types of initiatives will help graduate students, postdocs and young faculty broaden their mathematical background and start new collaborations.
