Research

Lyn Spillman’s research and teaching interests are grounded in cultural sociology and extend to social theory, economic sociology, comparative historical sociology, and political sociology She is author of Nation and Commemoration: Creating National Identities in the United States and Australia (Cambridge University Press, 1997) and editor of Cultural Sociology (Blackwell, 2002), as well as articles and chapters on cultural theory, theories of nationalism, collective memory, and causal reasoning. Her current research, supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship and an ASA/NSF Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline Award, investigates the ways trade associations invest economic action with meaning. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley and her B.A. with first class honours in philosophy and sociology from the Australian National University.
