The year was 1436. The place: Florence. The cathedral: Santa Maria del Fiore. All Florentine eyes looked up to the mighty dome that Brunelleschi alone had successfully devised to cap the cathedral roof. With this master achievement Florence took on its characteristic landscape and led the Western World into the light of the Renaissance. For the next 100 years Florence was to be the cradle of rebirth in art, architecture, letters and philosophy. Seminal figures like Michelangelo, Botticelli, Ghiberti, Cellini, Lorenzo de Medici and Leonardo da Vinci flourished and brought forth the treasures of Western civilization: The David, The Baptistry Doors, Giotto's Bell Tower, the Pazzi Chapel, the Medici and Uffizi palace, the Birth of the Venus.

Shock of Futurism, The

VHS, 23 min, Color, English narration, 1992
At the time when Picasso and Braque in Paris were breaking down naturalistic perception in painting with their Cubist works, the more radical Italian Futurists did not believe that nature could be portrayed realistically in art.
By replacing the fixed point of view of traditional art with motion and speed Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla, Carlo Carrà, and Gino Severini--the painters featured in this video and the leaders of Futurism--emerged to the forefront of the international art scene from the stale and conservative cultural atmosphere of Italy before World War I.
The least known and the most extreme of all the twentieth-century Avant-Gardes, the Futurists developed many concepts and artistic principles--such as simultaneity, conceptualism, plasticity, and others--present throughout the century from Dada to Pop-Art, that made modern art such an exciting and striking phenomenon.

Venice is a fairy tale city, rising from the sea on 119 small islands, separated by the 160 canals that dominate Venetian life.
Five hundred years ago it was a world center of trade and commerce. Its jewelled Basilica, a blend of Byzantine splendor and Western
imagination, was built in 829 to honor St. Mark, the city's patron saint. Close by is the pink marble Palace of the Doges, the
Sansovino Library, the towering Campanile, the Landmark Clock, all around a square--the Piazza San Marco--that has been called
"the most beautiful room in Europe." It has been half a millenium since Venice ruled the waves. Since then its churches and palaces,
gondolas and canals, public buildings and private villas, art museums and piazzas have steadily declined into a gorgeous decay.
What Venice rules now is the heart! From Byron to Browning, from Thomas Mann to Ernest Hemingway, writers, poets, artists and more
than a quarter of a million visitors a year are drawn to the city by the sea.

Oblomov lies in bed, pondering one vital, earth-shattering question: Should he get up? Thus we meet one of the greatest creations in all Russian literature--Oblomov, good-natured and indolent, with the mind of a reasonable man and the ambition of a giant sloth, wearily reclining while a procession of visitors pleads with him to change his ways. We are drawn to this strange figure in the same way as is the energetic Stolz or the beautiful and vivacious Olga. For Oblomov's idiosyncrasies are universal... and "Oblomovism" knows no class, no era, no country; it finds a home in every human heart.

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
No. 196
VHS, 105 min, Color, English, 1988
Ivan Denisovich is a prisoner in a Stalinst work camp. Trapped in an oppressive system designed to break men of their spirit, they continue their determined fight to retain sanity and self worth.
Every day this test of perseverance is torturously endured. Each day is a struggle between each prisoner and the state. Whether outwitting the guards in the filthy mess hall, aiding a comrade in the densely populated bunks or meeting the construction quota at the snow covered worksite, each condition represents another agonizing battle to be fought.
Today has been good. Ivan Denisovich earned extra food, he found a sawtooth blade to use for trade and this morning he slept late. His victories outweighed his losses.
Night brings relief. Another day has passed. He accomplished the impossible. He has survived.
Ivan Denisovich is free...to sleep.
Testament to the human condition within a Soviet labor camp, this film portrays the angst and hope conveyed by Nobel laureate Alexander Solzhenitsyn, in his internationally acclaimed novel.

They use frequently encountered vocabulary, common grammatical constructions and relate directly to topics covered in most school and university study programmes at post-beginners and intermediate level.
The audio cassettes are divided into 6 modules to match each of the videotape programmes. They include pre-viewing and post-viewing exercises, featuring Russian actors along with pieces of soundtrack taken from the film.
The booklets provide a variety of practical exercises to aid the planning and development of extension work. Initial linguistic activities can be practiced by students prior to watching the video and are then consolidated in further worked examples after viewing. In total, the teaching package provides 60-80 hours of integrated classroom study.

Molière's "Dom Juan", da Tonte's libretto for Mozart's "Don Giovanni", and the "Don Juan in Hell" scene in George Bernard Shaw's "Man and Superman" are the other most famous versions, with the notable addition of Zorrilla's play. It was the most successful play of the nineteenth century in Spain. The reason is made obvious by this stylish, lavish, captivating production.

Meticulous attention to historical detail, spectacular cinematic production values, and the swashbuckling plot itself make this filmed medieval epic superb modern entertainment as well as fundamental education.

When their father is killed by government soldiers and their mother taken away, they set out for the "promised land" to the north--El Norte. It is a perilous journey frought with dangers. Tijuana is a dismal shantytown inhabited by many people who are ready to cheat and kill for their meager possessions. The pícaro is a quintessentially Spanish character--important as a literary non-hero in world literature and critical to an understanding of Spanish culture and Spanish values. Drawing on the writings of Cervantes, Quevedo and Alemán, this production defines for us the characteristics of the pícaro: his role in society, his relationship to his master and mistress, his sense of humor and his alienation, and, above all, his reliance on his own wits and his ability to outsmart others--to land, regardless of how he is thrown or where he falls, on his own two feet.
