Wedding in Galilee
No. 338
VHS, 113 min, Color, Hebrew and Arabic with English subtitles, 1987
One of the only films produced in Israel to feature an Arab point of view, Wedding in Galilee is a richly-detailed allegory of marriage, tradition and national identity.
The elder of a Palestinian village in Israel is given permission to hold a traditional wedding for his son on the condition that the Israeli military governor and his staff be guests of honor at the ceremony.

VHS, 90 min, Color, French with English subtitles, 1970
A sensitive businessman must reluctantly choose between his family and his mistress, both of whom he dearly loves. Injured in an automobile accident on the way to his moment of decision, he deliriously reflects back on his life, finding sweetness and meaning in the simplest of memories. Though a stylishly sophisticated romantic comedy with an exquisitely French sensibility, "Les Choses de la Vie" gradually builds its delicate emotions into a deeply moving examination of the precious fragility of life and relationships. In his first major work, director Claude Sautet has fashioned an observant and preceptive study of the varieties of personal connections--with parents and children, lovers and friends--that each of us makes in life, connections which bind us together and keep us apart.

Year in Provence, A - Winter (Part 1 of 4)
No. 401
VHS, 90 min, Color, English with French, No subtitles, 1993
The new year arrives and so do the Mayles. But settling into their glorious 200-year-old stone farmhouse complete with wine cellar, courtyard, swimming pool and almond trees proves unsettling, for the infamous Mistral— a bitter cold northerly wind— has also arrived. It freezes the water pipes on the second day. And so the Mayles open the door to the famous Colombani, the Napoleon of plumbers, and with him comes a flood of delightful characters that will keep Peter Mayle busy writing all year… even if he does have to type with gloves on.

Year in Provence, A - Spring (Part 2 of 4)
No. 402
VHS, 90 min, Color, English with French, No subtitles, 1993
The magnificent Provençal spring rolls in and so do the out-of-towners. From April to June, the Lubéron Valley fills with the sights and sounds of Englishmen and Parisian, who disrupt the sublime tempo of buds and blossoms. Like the locals, Peter and Annie Mayle are amuzed by the invader's ignorance of the art of Provençal intimacy. Three kisses is the greeting, no matter how dirty the cheek. Conversation is punctuated by the index finger, thrust firmly into the listener's chest— unless he is a she. Squeezed shoulders, slaped backs, pummeled kidneys and pinched cheeks are the norm. In Provence, the greater the friendship, the more chance of bodily harm.

Year in Provence, A - Summer (Part 3 of 4)
No. 403
VHS, 90 min, Color, English with French, No subtitles, 1993
Ah, summer in the south of France: the sun is high, the days are long and the earthy flavors of the season tempt the palate in remarkable ways. In the town square, the annual goat race is at hand. Peter and Annie Mayle place their bets on the winner and learn that the loser will be, well, delicious. Come September, the Mayle's grapes are ready for harvest. But before his crop is crushed into vintage, Peter is curious to find out just how good his "year" will be. His quest leads him to the heart of the world's greatest vineyards where the full-bodied tastes of the region dazzle the senses.

Year in Provence, A - Fall(Part 4 of 4)
No. 404
VHS, 90 min, Color, English with French, No subtitles, 1993
Fall in the Lubéron Valley brings crystal blue skies and the intoxicating scent of logs on the fire. Amid the crisp autumn days, Annie and Peter Mayle have reason to celebrate: their houseguests have all returned to dreary old England, the renovations to their home have finally been completed, and the wine cellar is stocked full of vintage Mayle. Now, as Christmas nears, the meals become heartier and the locals' regard for Annie and Peter grows. At the same time, the Mayles' affection for this land where time is measured not by weeks and days, but by seasons deepens. After a year in Provence, the Mayles are right at home.

Kaspar Hauser
No. 341
VHS, 137 min, Color, German with English subtitles
Kaspar Hauser tells the bizarre story of an elaborate plot to control the lineage of the throne of the Duchy of Baden as the scheming Countess Hockberg (Katharina Thalbach) conspires to kidnap the rightful heir, Kaspar Hauser, and replace him with a changeling. Kaspar is imprisoned for twelve years in a dark cellar until, one day in 1828, he appears on the streets of Nuremberg a crippled, disturbed young man. André Eisermann delivers a brilliant, moving performance as the child-like Kaspar who, after his discovery on that desolate roadside, is taken under the wings of a succession of benefactors. In a grim, pessimistic reworking of the Pygmalion tale, its wild man is transformed by "civilized" society into a gentleman, even though Kaspar faces the threat of betrayal by the very forces that sought to "rescue" him. Also, see The Mystery of Kaspar Hauser.

Shock of Futurism, The
No. 253
VHS, 23 min, Color, English narration, 1992
At the time when Picasso and Braque in Paris were breaking down naturalistic perception in painting with their Cubist works, the more radical Italian Futurists did not believe that nature could be portrayed realistically in art.
By replacing the fixed point of view of traditional art with motion and speed Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla, Carlo Carrà, and Gino Severini--the painters featured in this video and the leaders of Futurism--emerged to the forefront of the international art scene from the stale and conservative cultural atmosphere of Italy before World War I. The least known and the most extreme of all the twentieth-century Avant-Gardes, the Futurists developed many concepts and artistic principles--such as simultaneity, conceptualism, plasticity, and others--present throughout the century from Dada to Pop-Art, that made modern art such an exciting and striking phenomenon.

Venice
No. 276
VHS, 30 min, Color, English narration, 1992
Venice is a fairy tale city, rising from the sea on 119 small islands, separated by the 160 canals that dominate Venetian life. Five hundred years ago it was a world center of trade and commerce. Its jewelled Basilica, a blend of Byzantine splendor and Western imagination, was built in 829 to honor St. Mark, the city's patron saint. Close by is the pink marble Palace of the Doges, the Sansovino Library, the towering Campanile, the Landmark Clock, all around a square--the Piazza San Marco--that has been called "the most beautiful room in Europe." It has been half a millenium since Venice ruled the waves. Since then its churches and palaces, gondolas and canals, public buildings and private villas, art museums and piazzas have steadily declined into a gorgeous decay. What Venice rules now is the heart! From Byron to Browning, from Thomas Mann to Ernest Hemingway, writers, poets, artists and more than a quarter of a million visitors a year are drawn to the city by the sea.

Don Juan Tenorio (Part 1)
No. 61
VHS, 75 min, Color, No subtitles
The first appearance of the Don Juan legend in literary form was in Tirso's "El Burlador de Sevilla". Molière's "Dom Juan", da Tonte's libretto for Mozart's "Don Giovanni", and the "Don Juan in Hell" scene in George Bernard Shaw's "Man and Superman" are the other most famous versions, with the notable addition of Zorrilla's play. It was the most successful play of the nineteenth century in Spain. The reason is made obvious by this stylish, lavish, captivating production.

No. 64
VHS, 60 min, Color, No subtitles
This is a spectacular introduction to the study of Spanish literature and culture: a spirited full-cast, full-color, accurate period production of one of the basic works of hispanic study. El Cid is unique among the world's great epics in having been composed so close to the actual historical events in which its hero took part (a mere 40 years after the death of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, el Cid himself) that we are able to distinguish between man and legend. Meticulous attention to historical detail, spectacular cinematic production values, and the swashbuckling plot itself make this filmed medieval epic superb modern entertainment as well as fundamental education.

Beginning in the remote mountain jungles of Guatemala, awash with the lushness of nature and the rainbow colors of the Mayans, this highly-acclaimed drama about a brother and sister seeking a better life centers on two young Indians. When their father is killed by government soldiers and their mother taken away, they set out for the "promised land" to the north--El Norte. It is a perilous journey frought with dangers. Tijuana is a dismal shantytown inhabited by many people who are ready to cheat and kill for their meager possessions. To cross the U.S. border, they must brave a treacherous rat-infested sewage tunnel. And when they finally reach Los Angeles their trials are not yet over, for they are "illegals" sub-merged in an alien culture.

El Pícaro (Cervantes, Quevado and Aleman)
No. 74
VHS, 33 min, Color, No subtitles
The pícaro is a quintessentially Spanish character--important as a literary non-hero in world literature and critical to an understanding of Spanish culture and Spanish values. Drawing on the writings of Cervantes, Quevedo and Alemán, this production defines for us the characteristics of the pícaro: his role in society, his relationship to his master and mistress, his sense of humor and his alienation, and, above all, his reliance on his own wits and his ability to outsmart others--to land, regardless of how he is thrown or where he falls, on his own two feet.

He wanted to preserve the Catholic faith while the Spanish author Cervantes questioned the official values in his work "Don Quixote", the prototype of the modern novel.
