LIBRARY SERVICES Opening Hours The library is open at all times when the London Centre is open, and operates a self-check out system. See the FAQ for more details. Research Assistance Ms Tyrell has as regular desk duty hours in the Library, Monday through Friday 10.30 – 1.00. Ms Tyrell can be consulted at other times either in person in Room 1.07, via telephone [extension 7839], or by email. Information on external libraries and online resources is also available through this website. Catalogue The LUP Library catalogue is avaliable online. Please contact Ms Tyrell if you have any difficulties using it. Reference and Circulating Material Reference material is housed in the central room of the library. Books marked with Reference, and/or Do Not Check Out labels should be used only in the library. Removing them to the computer labs is not permitted. Everything else, including DVDs, CDs, Travel, Oversize and London Focus books, can be borrowed. Because of the short period of time students spend in London, the loan period for all material is one week. Newspapers and Journals The LUP Library takes a full range of the weekday national papers, including both the broadsheets and the tabloid press, as well as The Economist, and London’s weekly event’s guide, Time Out. Past issues are kept for two weeks. For back issues beyond that date, students are advised to consult the Westminster Reference Library on Leicester Square. Newspapers and Journals must not be removed from the Library. For access to a wide range of academic journals, the LUP Library has an arrangement with the ILL Department of the Hesburgh Library to provide electronic copies of the articles that you need. Log in to place your requests, and select delivery method ' electronic' and the collection location as London. In addition to the arrangements for ILL access to journals described above, the LUP Library also has an agreement with the historic London Library to provide local ILL access to their collections. Students may consult the London Library catalogue online, and request two volumes at a time, using the purple forms provided in the LUP Library. If the book is available at the London Library we aim to provide a next working day turn around. London Library books are loaned to students for one week, and can be renewed once. If an item is not available via ILL, Ms Tyrell will advise on alternative sources. Photocopier The photocopier in the LUP Library is PIN operated. Students are emailed their PIN at the begining of their semester in London. Copies made with your PIN will be charged to your student account at the rate of 10p per copy. Class Materials Photocopy material requested for the library by faculty is stored in the file drawers by the photocopier, and arranged in order of class number. Please do not remove these copies from the Library. If you wish to use an article for home study or to annotate, please make your own copy. Audio Visual Material CDs and DVDs can be checked out using the regular self-check station, and are loaned for one week. The majority of DVD holdings are Region 2, and students may have to alter the settings on their laptops for the discs to play. There are three DVD players in the library, and students can also use any computer in the building, including those in empty classrooms to watch DVDs. Please report any problems using these machines to Ms Tyrell, so they can be resolved. Library Rules Consideration for others. In a small community such as the LUP the actions of an individual will impact immediately on their peers. Please do not steal, hide, damage, or deface library resources. Noise. The central room of the library is designed for group work, and the left-hand reading room for quiet study. Please do not disrupt other’s study with your music or conversation. Switch mobile phones and laptop computers to silent mode. No food – as elsewhere in the London Centre. |
