As the Libraries continues to explore options for making electronic
resources accessible to patrons through various pages in the Libraries'
web structure, questions regarding subject organization have arisen.
In order to discuss these questions and establish some initial guidelines
for further web development, the Subject Organization of Electronic
Resources group (SOER) is formed. This group represents a joint
effort between the Working Group on Bibliographic Access to Electronic
Resources (WGBAER) and the Web Management Team (WMT).
SOER will be co-chaired by the chair of WGBAER and WMT. Even though
it is recognized that the addition of another committee appointment
represents a commitment in time and energy, interested committee
members from these two committees are invited first to join as members
of SOER. If necessary, libary staff from outside this group will
be invited to join in order to round out the discussion. Committee
members serve not only for their expertise, but also as representatives
to their areas of the libraries.
The focus of SOER is to explore subject access in the following
areas initially: the databases web pages, the ejournals web page,
the internet sites web page, and the subject specialists web pages.
Some initial issues to be discussed will be the need for and type
of subject access, consistency of subject access between pages and
the local catalog, and mechanisms for giving input to subject access
development.
