It's hard to imagine the Library functioning
at all without this group of dedicated individuals. The
most recent and very obvious example of their work is the
FunLove virus that stuck the Libraries a couple of weeks
ago. Once it became apparent what had happened, Bill Sill
quickly organized the group to deal with the problem. Bill
and the DCCs spent three days visiting each NT@ND workstation
in the Libraries installing the new software, getting machines
back into working order and helping people clean their files.
Even though each DCC is administratively part
of a specific department, each one has volunteered to assist
computer users in other departments so that there is complete
coverage in the Libraries. They have been responsible for
organizing and assisting with training for things like ALEPH
and Macro Express, and they offer their users customized
training, tutorials, documentation and one-on-one help.
The individuals of the Support Center work admirably together
helping each other in order to assist the PC users within
the Libraries.

I would like to commend the difficult and
valuable work done by Clara Enriquez and all of her colleagues
during our recent computer virus attack. They were all very
dedicated, courteous and persistent during a very stressful
time for all of us.

This team of staff members takes great pride
in continually offering quality patron service. The patrons
which frequent the circulation desk frequently verbalize
on the friendly cheerful atmosphere and the helpfulness
of the staff. Every season they also comment on the decorations.
"It makes me feel like home." "They brighten my day." "You
are always so festive and upbeat." "You make our visit to
the library so enjoyable." These are only a select few of
the comments that are heard from our library patron each
and every day. I would like to recognize them for not only
their "GREAT" patron service but for working as a team in
enhancing the appearance of our highly visable area by the
seasonal decorating of the section. Hats off to the circulation
and searching sections of Hesburgh Library.
From a very proud Supervisor

Preservation Department

It is with great pride that we highlight the
Staff of the Department of Preservation and Conservation,
to the "Wall of Fame," for their accomplishments
this fiscal year 1999-2000. Under the direction of Conservator
Liz Dube, the staff has demonstrated great teamwork,
dedication, and commitment to the University Libraries in
the absence of a Preservation Administrator. Through its
knowledge and perseverence, they have not only continued
their work but have made great advancements with the undertaking
of many new initiatives within each unit.
Diane Sikorski, Conservation, is restoring
the Borges Collection and is designing the layouts for a
major exhibit at the Snite Museum, of the Eric Gill Collection.
Marsha Meuleman and Margaret Ankrom, Repair, have
undertaken the restoration of the Borges and Irish Collections
and have reinstituted the Use Base Program.
Pat Karpinski, Special Projects, has reinstituted
the Mass Deacidification Program targeting the Irish and
Borges Collections, and has streamlined two major processes
for the department.
Dorothy Paul, Reformatting, has completed the first
4 titles of the new Digitizing Project.
Cindi Hoffman, Bindery, has completed the year long
Stiffening Project.
Debbie Huyvaert, Bindery, has reinstituted the Use
Base Program and initiated processing the Anastos collection.
Lisa Stienbarger has been instrumental in many ALEPH
committees resulting in advanced reports, permission authorizations,
and general enhancements for the libraries.
And, The Preservation Disaster Team responded to
the call of an emergency in the restoration and treatment
of approximately 100 water damaged volumes at St. Mary's
College Library.
Yes, the PRESERVATION DEPARTMENT has made the improbable---
possible!!!

Over the past year the ALEPH Working group (AWG) and the
ALEPH Department have struggled successfully to bring order
and coherence to the process of improving ALEPH at Notre
Dame. The results of this struggle are becoming more obvious
as the months roll on.
Back in the "old days" we used to complain
about how unresponsive NOTIS was to our needs and how long
it took for them to come up with improvements. Well, we
got what we asked for. Ex Libris has certainly proved to
be responsive.
AWG and the ALEPH Department have spent much
time and effort developmenting a practical method for implementing
the improvements, fixes and patches (AKA "rep changes")
which Ex Libris churns out every week. We have gone from
being over 700 rep changes behind to being virtually up
to date.
By the way AWG may be pronoucned "Aw Gee"
or "Awwwgug" --depending on your mood.

CADM
The Preservation Department would like to extend a heartfelt
thanks to CADM for their hard work and consistent willingness
to help out when Preservation activities impact catalog
records.
Without CADM, Preservation would have been unable to proceed
on a number of important initiatives this year. CADM has
graciously and effectively taken on extra work flows; allowing
us to seamlessly move forward in our own work. Over the
past year, CADM has provided essential cataloging support
for our use-based collections conservation workflow, our
re-invigorated mass deacidification initiative, and our
reformatting workflow.
Kudos to CADM for all your hard work!
Gratefully,
The Preservation Department

The last decade has been one of continual if not continuous
change. The people in Reference have constantly adapted
their services so as to seek out, learn and use the latest
technologies for the benefit of our patrons -- without loosing
touch with the old. Though at times a bit frazzled, they
present a positive, welcoming face to the Notre Dame community
and provide high quality service to back it up.

Arts and Letters Document
Delivery Team
Julia Douthwaite and Mary Ellen Koepfle from the College
of Arts and Letters; Aaron Bales, Andy Boze, Sue Dietl,
and Jo Bessler from the University Libraries; and Donald
Padgett from the Office of Information Technologies.
Honorary Support Team: Elaine Molenda, the Arts & Letters
Administrative Assistants, the IKON Copy Service, and the
delivery staff from General Services.
The Arts & Letters Document Delivery Team sped access to
library materials for faculty in the College of Arts & Letters
by allowing these faculty to order books and journal articles
from the Hesburgh Library collections for delivery to their
department. This pilot program included delivery to approximately
560 faculty in 26 Arts and Letters departments, centers
and institutes across campus.
This Extensive expansion of our campus delivery required
significant planning and negotiation. Challenges included:
developing e-forms for requests, ensuring appropriate patron
authentication, developing procedures to identify and retrieve
needed materials and to bill departments for copy charges,
arranging for reliable transportation of books and copies,
and negotiating for secure housing of library materials
in 26 non-library locations.
During the six month pilot, more than 2000 requests have
been processed. Response is enthusiastic. Early analysis
suggest that people simply want more of this great new service

ULTRATIME TEAM

Sandy Stellema
Eilene Franson
Theresa Casad
Honorary members: supervisors from throughout the Library
Armed with little training and incomplete documentation,
this team helped the library implement Ultratime-the Campus'
online system for tracking hourly work. Although Ultratime
ultimately saved innumerable staff hours spent in paper
tracking, its introduction demanded extraordinary study,
patience and perseverence.
The Ultratime Team offered initial training and trouble-shooting
support before they, or their campus advisors, had time
to test and master the system.
