February 10, 2004 --
The Library Professional Development Committee and Library
Faculty/Staff Training and Development Committee will co-sponsor a
presentation by Rich Wiggins,
Senior Information Technologist at Michigan State University.
Richard's discussion will include the
Accidental Thesaurus, which is a unique way of upgrading
the process of keyword searching within Intranet databases. His
involvment in the MSU Keyword Project has allowed Richard to be one of
the earliest pioneers at incorporating keyword searching on a
university portal which increases the likelihood of finding correct

December 2, 2003 --
Catholic Preservation Grants
Roundtable.
Charlotte Ames
and Alan Krieger will discuss
the proposal they are submitting to the Knights of Columbus to digitize
twenty five Catholic periodicals. They are working with the Catholic
Library Association and the American Theological Library Association to
create Roman Catholic Periodicals
Online, a product which will
link the bibliographic citations created in The Catholic Periodical
and Literature Index to online full-text versions of selected Roman
Catholic periodicals from 1981 to the present.
Liz Dube, Dave Jenkins, and Alan Krieger will provide an
overview of the investigative and planning process which resulted in
"Preservation
of Catholic Tradition Collections: Phase One", a grant proposal
submitted to the NEH's Division of Preservation and Access this July.
The grant proposal requests $700K in support of a two-year project to
preserve and increase access to a 6,500-volume collection of 19th and
early 20th century significant and endangered monographs documenting
the Catholic tradition.
November 17, 2003 -- Tom Teper, Head of Preservation at
the
University of Illinois - Urbana Champagne, will present "Preservation, Education, and the role of
Preservation in Digital Technology," a lively lecture on the
state of preservation in research libraries. Tom will discuss the
complex preservation challenges posed by the proliferation of digital
information, while also describing the continued importance of balanced
comprehensive preservation programs for research collections.

October 31, 2003 -- Bill Mischo, Engineering Librarian
from
the University of Illinois - Urbana Champagne, will be presenting a
lecture on the application of the Open Archives Initiative Harvesting
Project at Urbana Champagne. CANCELLED.

Tuai will present a
