POSITION TITLE:
Head, Library Systems Department/Systems Librarian

DEPARTMENT:

TITLE OF SUPERVISOR:
Associate Director for Information Systems and Digital Access (ISDA)

GENERAL SUMMARY:

As Head of the Library Systems Department, plans and implements production level client-server library systems services. Serves as primary contact with systems vendors for matters pertaining to all ILS operational issues and other library automation products as appropriate. Provides technical production services for applications administered by other library departments and/or other campus units Serves as a member of the library faculty.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Manages the Library Systems Department, which is responsible for the Aleph500 Integrated Library System and designated related client-server products as they are implemented at the Michiana Academic Library Consortium (MALC) libraries, of which Notre Dame is the largest installation.

- Plans, coordinates and implements development of ILS and related products with the vendor and the MALC community. Chairs the MALC Aleph Working Group, which coordinates and prioritizes ILS work, recommends major enhancements, and communicates with their respective constituencies.

- Collaborates with library departments and other campus units to coordinate and implement the use of client-server-based library technologies to manage campus digital resources and other non-traditional collections and services.

- Consults broadly and works closely with library departments for needs assessment and workflow design related to the ILS and related products.

- Reports regularly on ILS issues to the Associate Director for ISDA.

- Improves the ILS and related products through exploring their capabilities, understanding future trends, and working with internal and external user groups and vendors to extend systems functionality.

- Actively participates in various library system user groups, e.g., the North American Aleph Users' Group (NAAUG).

- Collaborates with other ISDA departments (Digital Access and Information Architecture, Desktop Computing and Network Services, Electronic Resources and Serials Access, Documents Access and Database Management, and the Business Information Center) in the development of overall technology planning for the Libraries.

- As a member of the Library faculty, participates on library and campus teams. Engages in professional development, scholarship and professional service.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- MLS degree or equivalent from ALA accredited program.
- Experience (two years minimum) in the management, policy development and cross-functional operational issues relating to an ILS operation.
- Experience or demonstrated potential for managing a major library department.
- Experience in large academic library preferred. Understanding of and sensitivity for issues specific to library consortial/partnership environments. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and develop solutions among peers in library departments. Demonstrated success in planning for and applying technology to meet internal and external user needs.
- Evidence of awareness of current trends in librarianship and information technology.
- Working understanding of library and industry standards, protocols, architectures and operating systems used in current library systems.

ENVIRONMENT:

The University of Notre Dame is a national Catholic teaching and research university enriched with a diversified faculty, located in northern Indiana ninety miles from Chicago. SALARY:

Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum salary is $55,000.

BENEFITS:

Librarians are non-tenure-track members of the faculty and earn 20 days vacation annually. The University offers an excellent benefits package including tuition remission for dependents, TIAA/CREF.
