Scanning and digitizing
Virtually any medium - paper, photographic slides, videotapes, audio cassettes, etc. - can be converted into a digital format for use on a computer. It is also possible to transfer digital material from an audio CD or DVD to a computer. The converted material is compact and easy to manipulate or catalogue. You may also be able to find digitized material on a website like YouTube. Copyright laws restrict what can legally be done with the material, but "fair use" guidelines provide educators some leeway.
Use in teaching & learning
Some instructors create collections of video clips or sound bytes for class presentations. Scanned images can be easily added to a PowerPoint slide. Media can also be incorporated into a course website.
