Mobile devices
Portable devices with processors - netbooks, PDA's, smartphones, etc. - have an increasing array of capabilities and software options. Adjectives like handheld, palmtop, and pocket-sized are often used. They may feature touch input or a miniature keyboard, and have the ability to synchronize with a desktop computer.
Use in teaching & learning
Nearly all students at Notre Dame have a cell phone, and most of them pay for text messaging service. Outside of the classroom, students can use them to record data in the field. We have only begun to tap the potential of a device like an iPhone that incorporates a camera, audio recorder, GPS, calculator, reference material, media player, and much more.
- A growing number of Notre Dame classes are using mobile devices with Poll Everywhere in place of clickers
NotreDame info
A number of individuals have iPhones, Blackberries and other devices, but the University has not endorsed any particular brand or type of mobile device, nor does it provide training or support for such devices. The Procurement office has negotiated discounts on many technology items. See https://buy.nd.edu/.
