Mashups and embedding

A mashup mixes media from different sources to create a derivative work. Standard digital formats make this relatively easy, while the Web provides ways to acquire material and distribute the finished work.

Embedding refers to inserting an external media item into a web page, creating a sort of window to another website. Examples include embedding a YouTube video into a blog post and embedding a Google Calendar into a page in Concourse. Embedding means the user doesn't have to leave the web page to enjoy the media.

Use in teaching & learning

Faculty can embed a variety of types of outside content into a blog or a page in Concourse, including photos from Flickr, presentations from SlideShare, Google Maps, and linkrolls from Delicious. One advantage is that copyright concerns are minimized. Here are some examples of media embedded on web pages:
