Audio conferencing and Skype
This allows people at two or more locations to interact live via two-way audio transmission. It can be accomplished over telephone lines using handsets or over the internet using computer software. Compared to its video counterpart, audio conferencing usually requires less bandwidth, is less complicated, and costs less. If everyone needs to be able to talk (not just listen), you will probably want to use a high end speakerphone.
Skype is a popular system for desktop audio and video conferencing; it has over 400 million registered users worldwide. Calls among users of the service are free, but there is a charge for calls to land lines and mobile phones. There are other services with similar capabilities.
Use in teaching & learning
A speaker from off campus can address a class. The instructor can teach while away at a conference. Student project groups can use Skype to conference after class.
