Free web tools for teaching and learning

These are programs that run in a web browser, as opposed to being installed on a computer. Many of them are free for basic use and many courses take advantage of them. "Web 2.0" is a term often associated with this phenomenon.

See the overview chart of selected web tools

General characteristics

  • A browser is the only required software, although some require a plug-in
  • Dynamic content – a page changes as the user edits it
  • Publicly available on the web – not installed on a local server
  • Users generate the content – “collective intelligence”
  • Users assign descriptive tags to content, creating a folksonomy (vs. taxonomy)
  • Merge content from different sources into “mashups” using widgets and embedding
  • Provides for comments or background discussion
  • Users can subscribe and receive new content automatically
  • Users participate and add value, rather than just looking for data
