Free web tools for teaching and learning
These are programs that run in a web browser, as opposed to being installed on a computer. Many of them are free for basic use and many courses take advantage of them. "Web 2.0" is a term often associated with this phenomenon.
General characteristics
- A browser is the only required software, although some require a plug-in
- Dynamic content – a page changes as the user edits it
- Publicly available on the web – not installed on a local server
- Users generate the content – “collective intelligence”
- Users assign descriptive tags to content, creating a folksonomy (vs. taxonomy)
- Merge content from different sources into “mashups” using widgets and embedding
- Provides for comments or background discussion
- Users can subscribe and receive new content automatically
- Users participate and add value, rather than just looking for data
