Several initiatives will link this research with education. It will
help provide
graduate education in computational science. The interdisciplinary nature of this
project, the collaborative subprojects in which all students are or
will be involved, and the necessary understanding of algorithmic,
high-performance computing, and software engineering issues will give
them a well-rounded education to enable them to successfully
collaborate with scientists and engineers. For example, as documented
in the letters of support for this proposal, I will co-advise Mrs. Yao
Wang, with Prof. Martin Tenniswood of the department of Biology at
Notre Dame. She is a medical doctor with an M.S. in Biology and will
be working towards a Ph.D. in Computer Science. Also, Mr. Hong Hu, a
student in our group who has an M.S. in Chemistry, will be
co-sponsored by Prof. Craig Lent at the Nanotechnology center at Notre
Dame to simulate molecular QCA. Also, with faculty in Chemistry,
Biology, Chemical Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering,
we have started a
molecular modeling group, to enable undergraduates, graduates,
and postdocs to present their results and engage in scientific
exchange.
