He became a judge of the High Court in 1975, serving for seven years before being appointed to the Court of Appeal in 1982. In 1986 he was created a Law Lord, serving as Senior Law Lord 1996-98. He is the co-author of The Law of Restitution. In addition to his academic and judicial career, he has played a significant role in introducing the concept of comparative law to the United Kingdom.
