Sighting in Corkscrew Swamp

1.
Owls blink more slowly
Than other animals.
Their heads turn slowly too.
I saw one on a branch just above me.
The thrum of my own blood
Felt like a flaw in time.

The owl looked at me and didn’t look.
He was a metronome.
The air slowed. Trees slowed.
Everything that lived, lived more slowly.
Everything not alive was dead longer.

2.
When he sleeps
He hides his lovely face.
sleep hides his small, fierce heart.
