Dear our close friends

Fundraising Concert for Homeless people,

We write to invite you warmly to the sixth of our concerts involving our close friends from Northwestern University, University of Notre Dame, Yale University, University of Oxford and Universite Paris-Sorbonne, Paris IV.

The concert will feature performances involving groups from all schools. The concert begins at 5:00pm and should last somewhat over three hours; refrehsments will be served afterwards.

If you would like to attend, to ensure we have enough seating and refreshments, we would be greateful if you could complete the slip that accompanies the paper copy of this letter and return to us until 3rd December,2007.

We do hope you will be able to join us to enjoy the art work of our musicians.

The recording I have appreciated for past one month.

연말이 되다 보니 이래저래 씨디가 많이 들어온다.
이번 겨울에 친구들 대부분이 고향에 가는 관계로, 다른 해보다 일찍 크리스마스 선물을 주고 있다.
친구들이 가기전에 얼른 나도 크리스마스 선물로 줄 레코딩을 정해야 하는데, 올해는 딱 눈에 띄는 레코딩이 없어서 친구들에게 무슨 씨디를 성탄절 선물로 해줘야 할지 고민이다. 지금 소개할 레코딩들의 대부분은 내가 친구들에게 성탄절 선물로 줄려고 고려중인 씨디들이다.

1. Bach, Christmas Oratorio, Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
DVD로 출시된 1981년 공연에 이은 아르농쿠르의 두번째 바흐 성탄절 오라토리오이다.
이전 레코딩과 비교할때 상당히 편한 느낌을 안겨주는 레코딩이다.
일단 언제나 감동적인 목소리를 들려줬던 Arnold Schoenberg Chorus가 합창을 맡고 있어서 믿음직스럽다. 또한 독창자들의 면모도 화려한데 Christine Schafer, Bernarda Fink, Werner Gura, Gerald Finley, Christian Gerharher.
들어보기 전에 예상외로 생각했던 독창자는 Christine Schafer와 Christian Gerharher였다.
Christine Schafer는 모짜르트에 가장 잘 어울리는 목소리라는 편견을 가지고 있어서 바흐의 음악에는 어울리지 않을거라 편견을 가지고 있었는데, 의외로 담백하면서 꾸밈없는 목소리로 성탄절 오라토리오가 지닌 진중함과 생기를 잘 표현하고 있다.
Christian Gerharher는 바리톤 치고는 섬약한 목소리의 소유자인데, 자연스러움을 안겨준다.
아르농쿠르 아저씨가 힘을 쫘악 빼고 녹음을 하신 느낌이다.
그래도 이 오라토리오가 지니는 spiritual and intellectual rigour는 놓치지 않고 있다.
모... 그래도 아르농쿠르 아저씨의 전매 특허 트럼펫은 여전하다.
이전까지는 스즈키의 성탄절 오라토리오를 주로 들었는데, 이제부터는 아르농쿠르의 신녹음을 더 자주 들을 것 같다.


2. Handel, Solomon, Daniel Reuss
헨델의 오라토리오 솔로몬의 절대 강자는(?) 뭐니뭐니 해도 맥크리쉬이다.
Daniel Reuss의 지휘의 특징이라면 그의 스트라빈스키 지휘에서 들려준 것과 마찬가지로 기본적으로 합창단을 잘 콘트롤 하는 지휘자라는 점이다. 연주에서는 다소 아쉬움감이 있기는 한데, 합창은 무척 뛰어나다. 생동감 있는 합창을 들려주는 레코딩이라는 점에서는 만족스럽다.
그리고 독창자의 면모가 꽤 화려한데, 일단 눈에 띄는 인물은 Carolyn Sampson , Sarah Connolly와 Mark Padmore 이다. 이 세명이 참여했다는 이유만으로도 이 레코딩은 살 가치가 있다는 성찬옹의 발언을 이번 경우에는 받아들일 수 밖에 없다. 특히 Carolyn Sampson의 독창은 훌륭하다. 바램이 있다면 Carolyn Sampson이 부디 헨델리안으로서 꾸준히 좋은 레코딩을 녹음해줬으면 하는 바램.


3. Canteloube Chant d' Auvergne, Vol 2, Serge Baudo
솔직히 이 레코딩은 지휘자나 악단을 믿고 샀다기 보다는 단지 독창자 베로니크 장만 믿고 산 레코딩이다. 내가 지금 활동중인 소프라노중 세명만 좋아하는 소프라노를 꼽자면 베로니크 장, 나탈리 드세이, 그리고 르네 플레밍이다. 르네 플레밍 같은 경우는 편차가 심한 편이고, 나탈리 드세이 같은 경우는 헨델과 모짜르트에 한정해서 좋아하지만, 베로니크 장은 거의 90%이상의 믿음을 가지고 레코딩을 산다. 이 레코딩도 이런 나의 믿음에 어긋나지 않는 앨범이다. 일단 프렌치 작곡가의 작품이니 베로니크 장 이상으로 이 곡들을 소화해낼 수 있는 인물은 없겠지만, 그녀의 이 앨범에서의 목소리는 gorgeous 라는 표현이 딱 적당하다. 그리고 놀라운 점은 각 곡들이 지니는 뉘앙스를 하나도 놓치지 않고 제대로 표현하고 있다는 점인데, 특히 Tryptiqu는 오랫동안 내가 들으면서 좋아할 곡이다.


4. Stockhausen Stimmung, Theatre of Voices/Paul Hillier
캐서린의 강력한 추천과 Paul Hillier에 대한 믿음 때문에 구입 했는데...
이 작품은 친해지기 어렵다. 반복 청취하는 것도 꽤 인내심을 요구한다.
이유중의 하나는 각각의 목소리들이 통합되기 보다는 각각 따로 논다는 느낌을 안겨준다는 것이다.
그래모폰에서는 the vocal strobing and the narrow concentration of massed voices can sound disorientating 라고 표현했는데, 딱 들어맞는 말이다.
특히 the vocal strobing라는 이 작품을 표현하는데 딱 좋은 말이다.
(이래서 국어 공부를 열심히 해야 한다. 느낌바를 제대로 전달 하려면..)
하지만 이 따로 노는 느낌에 적응이 되면, 상당히 중독성이 높은 작품이다.


5. Murcia, William Carter
바로크 시대의 기타에 대해 궁금해왔던 차에 때마침 발견한 레코딩이다.
Murcia는 당대 최고의 기타 연주자였다고 한다. 바로크 기타를 연주하는데 있어서 중요한 것은 strumming과 plucking 사이의 균형감을 유지하는 문제인데, 윌리엄 카터는 이 균형감을 잘 유지 하고 있다. 아마도 큰 일이 없는 이상 친구들에게 이 레코딩을 줄 확률이 가장 높다.



6. Weill, Symphony No.1 & No.2, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra/Marin Alsop
음..이건 발매된지 좀 된 레코딩인데...
일단 Second Symphony의 강자는 켄트 나가노와 마리아스 얀손스이다. 그리고 첫번째 레코딩인 게르 베르티니의 레코딩도 괜찮다. 커플링 된 곡을 무시하고 단지 Second Symphony만 듣는다고 하면 켄트 나가노가 조금더 나은 선택이다. 하지만 ballet-chante를 원한다면, 이 레코딩은 필청이다. 작곡가 생전에 공연이 된 적이 없던 First Symphony와 더불어 ballet-chante 연주는 내가 여지까지 들어온 이 작품중에서 가장 뛰어나다. Lady In the Dark 같은 경우는 아이라 거쉬윈의 lyrics가 없기 때문에 그냥 호기심으로 들어볼만한 곡이다. 녹음은 낙소스가 그래왔듯이 꽤 깨끗한 편이다.


7. Janacek, Jenufa, Royal Opera House Orchestra, Bernard Haitink
이것도 조금 오래된 레코딩인데...
Jenufa에 있어서 만장일치의 레퍼런스는 매커래스 경의 레코딩이다. 순전히 호기심으로 사서 들어본 앨범인데... 일단 Haitink의 접근은 조금 부드러운 편이다. 야나체키안으로서는 아쉬운 부분이다. 특히 Kostelnicka가 Jenufa의 아기를 강가에 던진후 돌아오면서 바람이 창문을 열고 뒤이어 Kostelnicka 가 Death가 그녀의 집을 응시하고 있다고 상상하는 부분이(이 오페라의 가장 중요한 부분이다.) 지녀야할 혼돈스러움과 괴기스러움(?)이 부족하다.
야나체키안으로서는 불만족스러운 앨범인데, 일단 Mattila와 Silvasti의 독창이 훌륭하기 때문에 그럭저럭 본전 생각은 나지 않게 하는 앨범이다.

테사

저번 주에 출사 나갔다, 오랜만에 테사를 끼워 봤습니다.
바디는 S2였고요.

어제 그제 암실에서 캐서린/찬석이와 현상하며 이 얘기 저 얘기 나누다, 다시한번 저의 테사에 대한 애정을 확인해서 몇자 적습니다. ㅎㅎㅎㅎ

여기서 테사의 역사나 테사 개발 되는 시기에 135판형 렌즈에서 짜이즈의 아성을 따라잡았던 라이카의 얘기등등 관련된 얘기는 많지만, 그런 얘기는 많이 알려져 있으니 제끼고...

테사의 장점은 무엇보다 작은 크기입니다.
SLR에 물려도 RF수준의 작은 크기를 유지할 수 있어서 제가 무척 애용합니다.

그리고 색의 표현이 강합니다.
블랙을 블랙으로, 화이트를 화이트로 표현해내주는 능력이 뛰어납니다.

물론 선예도나 날카로움을 지닌 렌즈는 아니지만 꽤 따스한 느낌을 지닌 렌즈입니다.

사진을 올려서 확인시켜 드리는게 제가 한 말을 확인 시킬 수 있는 가장 확실한 방법이지만, 예전이나 지금이나 자신이 찍은 사진 홈페이지에 올리는 짓 싫어해서 -솔직히 홈페이지에 사진 올려놓고 자랑할 정도의 실력이 안되서 올리는 짓 싫어합니다.- 생략합니다.

* Especailly, Act 2 of Hippolyte et Aricie is one of greatest singe acts in Baroque opera.
One of William Christie's best achievements for 40 years.

2. Grainger, Paul Janes, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra/ Richard Hickox.
Triumphant, intriguing and fun packed volume Chandos's definitive Grainger Edition.

3. Songs of Medieval Italy, Acantus
Medieval music at its most haunting and evocative.

4. Bouzignac Te Deum & Motets.
Don't begin to think this is just another French baroque disc.

5. Bach, Musical Offering, BWV1079, Ensemble Sonnerie.
The most purely enjoyable Musical Offering for a long time.

6. Dvorak/Janacek/Matinu/Smetana, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra; Philharmonia Orchestra/Rafael Kubelik
A great conductor's early prime realised on the wings of a youthful – and brilliant – Philharmonia. Marvellous transfers

7. Janacek, Moravial Folk poetry in songs
Graphic and refreshing music, you do not need not to be a Janacek specialist to enjoy the record.

8. Telemann, Tafelmusik, Orchestra of the Golden Age
makes more of Telemann's inflective delicatesse than others.

9. Early Recordings on Deutsche Grammophon, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
vocal tour de force from 1974 that found the prolific baritone at the height of his Protean powers.

10. Schumann, Lieder, Bernarda Fink
An exceptional disc that confirms Fink's reputation as an outstanding singer
