Sharon Erickson Nepstad is professor of sociology and director of religious studies at the University of New Mexico. Her research focuses on nonviolent social change and the role of religion in progressive social movements.
At the Kroc Institute and the Center for the Study of Religion and Society, she will undertake a new research project on nonviolent citizen movements of the late 20th century. Using comparative historical methods, she will explore why some of these peaceful revolutions successfully facilitated a transition to democracy, while others failed.
Sharon is the author of numerous articles and two books: Convictions of the Soul: Religion, Culture and Agency in the Central American Solidarity Movement (Oxford University Press, 2004) and Religion and War Resistance in the Plowshares Movement (Cambridge University Press, 2008). She has served as the chair of the Peace, War and Social Conflict section of the American Sociological Association.
