Scott Byrd is working on his dissertation in sociology at the University of California, Irvine, on transnational coalition building and the World Social Forum. The project examines the capacity of transnational gatherings to integrate and organize civil society and movement organizations at the global, regional, and local levels to incubate transnational movement processes.
At the Kroc Institute and the Center for the Study of Social Movements & Social Change, he will examine the relationships between the multi-level organizational dynamics of transnational coalitions and networks and the conflict articulation strategies they employ. His writing has appeared in the journals Mobilization and Globalizations, and he has edited a forthcoming special issue on the World Social Forum for the Journal of World Systems Research. He has master’s degrees in sociology from the University of California, Irvine, and in Environmental Sciences from Oklahoma State University.
