Ramadan named Luce Professor
Swiss scholar Tariq Ramadan has
been appointed Henry R. Luce Professor of Religion, Conflict,
and Peacebuilding at the Kroc Institute. The appointment is
effective in fall of 2004.
Ramadan is the author
of Western Muslims and the Future of Islam (Oxford
University Press, 2003) as well as many articles on contemporary

Muslims. A public intellectual who bridges academics and community,
Ramadan seeks to construct a forum in which issues of justice
and peace can be explored by members of various faith traditions.
He will teach courses on Islam, religious peacebuilding, and
interfaith dialogue.
Ramadan earned his
Ph.D. from the University of Geneva (1998). He will be a member
of the Kroc Institute's core faculty, and hold a joint appointment
with the Notre Dame Department of Classics.
The professorship is funded by the
Henry R. Luce Foundation.
The foundation's
Luce Professorship program seeks to promote innovative, integrative,
interdisciplinary thinking and learning and is open to all
disciplines and departments at leading private American colleges
and universities with over 1000 students which have selective
liberal arts programs.
