New Delhi, October 14, 1998 (UNI) - Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today congratulated Professor Amartya Sen for winning this year's Nobel prize for economics. ``You have made us all proud,'' he said in a message here. Prof Sen, who teaches at the Trinity College in Cambridge, Britain, was named for the prestigious award for his contribution to welfare economics, especially his works on famines and poverty. The community of Indian economists and other social scientists were absolutely delighted at Amartya Sen getting the Nobel prize. In a message sent by the Delhi School of Economics, where Prof Sen taught for eight years until 1971, his colleagues said it was ``richly deserved and long overdue.'' He was an excellent conversationist and absolutely brilliant, said Prof Badal Mukherjee, director of the Delhi School of Economics.
