I'm a "Bengali Gujju" who lived in Cal for 25 years, and just visited last Oct '95, some things don't change at all, just the way I like it. Hat's off to you , for giving me "CALCUTTA" on line. God, I miss those 'aaloo chops' & 'puchkas".

Being a second-generation Bengali who has visited Calcutta many times over, thank you for this web page! I have long believed in the cultural primacy of the Bengali culture, and the scope of this page is yet another tribute to the diversity, richness, and the independent nature of our people and where we came from.

Hi. Somehow, searching the Web for Calcutta seems the most natural way to sign off at the end of the day. Thank you for providing one more stop on the way. Of course, Delhi is physically far closer to Calcutta than Indiana. But on the Web, distance matters little, right? Thank you again.

Please include Thakur RamkrishnaDev, Swami Vivekananda, etc. especially Swamiji's name along with Mother Teresa. Actually it will be nice if you could include a section/page on Dakhineshwar, Belur Math, etc. A nice picture of Dusk on the bank of Ganga (viewed from Belur) with SandhyaPradip all lit in Dakhineshwar would be nice! Wish technology was farther ahead so that sound of ka(n)shor-ghanta and sa(n)kh could be included! Sigh! I wish to congratulate you guys on what a tremendous job you have done!! Sure it brought back a deluge of emotions...a longing...a reminder of where we belong. Keep up the good work! Calcutta has always been the seat of culture, now is the time to prove it again! PLease also include a section containing addresses of institutions involved in social work so that people who are interested in making contributions or information can have easy access. In case you need to contact me please e-mail at banerjee@rss.dl.nec.com Thanks and congratulations again!

CALCUTTA ONLINE IS LIKE A DREAM COMING TRUE. I WAS BORN AND BROUGHT UP IN CALCUTTA AND I HAVE BEEN CURSING CALCUTTA SINCE THE DAY I SAW THE FIRST ALBINO COCKROACH AND SAW THE KNEE DEEP MUDDY WATER , THE VERY THOUGHT OF THE CHEMICAL COMBINATION OF THIS WATER MAKES ME SHIVER. INSPITE OF ALL THESE ,I WOULD NEVER EVEN DREAM OF LIVING ANYWHERE ELSE EXCEPT MY CALCUTTA.

I visited Calcutta in 1987 for almost a week, then flew up to Siliguri and back. I stayed at the Great Eastern Hotel--very Raj-like, but also with the only cockroaches I saw in India. Calcutta is a wonderful, invigorating city; I wandered about the ci ty trying hard to look like a local but not succeeeding, of course. I went to Kalighat (Mother Teresa') and to Prem Dan, St. Thomas's, the Writers' Building, the Maidan, the Anglican cathedral, and anywhere I could walk in the centre of town. It was wond erful. I was in India again in 1991 for three months but mostly in Rajaasthan and in the south, so I'm looking forward to making another trip to Calcutta in 1997 or 1998. Thanks for all the photographs. They brought back memories. Sincerely, Mary Anne Morel
