Speaker Bios

Al Hammond is Chief Information Officer and Senior Scientist at World Resources Institute. His responsibilities include institute-wide leadership for new analytic approaches and for WRI's Communications 2000 effort; he also directs the Strategic Indicator Research Initiative and writes and does research on long-term sustainability issues.

Dr. Hammond is an accomplished scientist and science journalist whose experience includes serving as founder and editor of Science 80-Science 86 magazine for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, founding editor of the National Academy of Sciences' Issues in Science and Technology, and research news editor of Science. In addition, he was a broadcaster for CBS radio and is the author or editor of 9 books and numerous scientific publications. He has won a number of national magazine awards and other journalistic honors. Dr. Hammond has served as a consultant to the White House science office, to several U.S. federal agencies, and to the United Nations. He has degrees from Stanford (in engineering) and Harvard (in applied mathematics).

Joe McCarthy is a Researcher with Accenture's Center for Strategic Technology Research (CSTaR), where he leads a number of projects exploring the area of Active Environments -- physical spaces that can sense their inhabitants and respond in appropriate ways.  Prior to joining Accenture in 1996, he was an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Hartford and spent a number of years as an independent consultant.  Joe holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts, an M.S. in Computer Science from RPI, and a B.A. in Philosophy from Ripon College.

Michael J. Mazarr is President of the Henry L. Stimson Center, a non-profit, nonpartisan institution that specializes in threat reduction and international security issues where policy, technology and politics intersect.
Dr. Mazarr previously served as senior vice president of the Electronic Industries Alliance, where he directed strategic planning and most recently led a major project on business trends and strategy. While at the Alliance, he also established innovative strategic alliances, developed an electronic magazine for members, and had the opportunity to study first-hand, and in-depth, the best management practices of many of the most innovative and effective companies in the nation.
Prior to joining EIA, Dr. Mazarr worked at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, where he edited the Center's journal, The Washington Quarterly, and directed the New Millennium Project, which researched and analyzed global and national trends. He earned an AB and MA from Georgetown University and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland.

Greg Hedges is the partner in charge of the eBusiness Risk Consulting practice for Arthur Andersen in Chicago. He is part of a team of more than 2,000 professionals worldwide that help clients manage business risks related to their deployment of eBusiness and other technologies. As the leader of a very fast growing eBusiness consulting practice, he currently faces the organizational challenges similar to those that challenge eBusiness enterprises. He leads efforts to help clients improve the infrastructure they need to manage business risks related to technology, to people, and their costs.

Robert Reilly is President of DHR International, an executive search firm servicing Fortune 1,000 companies. Ranked among the top ten search firms, DHR is the fastest growing executive search firm in the country and has offices in over 40 cities throughout the United States and over 30 countries throughout the world.
Mr. Reilly is chairman of the University of Notre Dame’s John Cardinal O’Hara Society, a networking and support group for MBA students and alumni.  He received both his undergraduate and MBA degrees from the University of Notre Dame.  He is also a graduate of the Human Resources Executive Program and Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.

Gary M. Reiner is Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of GE, a position he has held since 1996.  Reiner joined GE in 1991 as Vice President-Corporate Business Development where he was responsible for evaluating new business ideas and acquisitions, strategic planning, company-wide sourcing and driving best practices throughout the business. In 1998, he led the Company's Six Sigma Quality initiative, driving process implementation and program execution across all GE businesses. As part of his current role, Reiner leads GE's information technology and e-business efforts. He also serves as the Chairman of GE Information Services, which includes GE Global eXchange and GE Interbusiness Operations.
Reiner received a B.A. in economics from Harvard in 1976 and earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1980.

Robert H. Buckman is the retired Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Buckman Laboratories, a world leader in specialty chemicals, technical service, knowledge sharing and organizational learning. Although retired, Mr. Buckman continues as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for Buckman Laboratories. He also is a Board Member of the Institute of Paper Science and Technology and the Pulp and Paper Foundation at Western Michigan University, and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Pulp and Paper Foundation at North Carolina State University.
Specializing in knowledge management, Mr. Buckman speaks at various worldwide forums and works with Buckman customers on building or improving their own Knowledge Management and Organizational Learning efforts.

Dan Hesse is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of TeraBeam Networks.  Through the use of proprietary “fiber-less optic” technology, TeraBeam’s mission is to eliminate the “last-mile problem” and realize the Internet’s full potential.
Prior to joining Terabeam, Mr. Hesse spent 23 years at AT&T, most recently serving as President and CEO of AT&T Wireless Services, at the time the U.S.'s largest wireless operator. He served as general manager for the AT&T Online Services Group (which included the Worldnet family of Internet services) and as President and as CEO of AT&T Network Systems International (currently international arm of Lucent Technologies). In addition, Hesse has held AT&T positions in network operations, international services, strategic planning, product management and sales.
Mr. Hesse received a Master of Science degree fro the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a MBA degree from Cornell University.

Peter Bell is Chairman and CEO of StorageNetworks (NASDAQ: STOR), the world’s first Storage Service Provider.  StorageNetworks is poised to make managed data storage services as accessible as phone or electric utility services.  Prior to the company’s IPO in June, 2000 Red Herring listed Storage Networks as one of the top 50 private companies most likely to change the world.  Mr. Bell is a 14-year veteran of the storage business and his prior experience includes key management positions at EMC Corporation. He is a featured speaker at industry conferences around the country.
