Course
Objectives:
To gain direct experience
by fulfilling responsibilities for an actual consulting engagement and gain
some real life experience in handling client communications, requirements
planning, vendor selection, systems design & implementation, and many other
aspects of consulting projects.
Deliverables:
While each project requirements will be different, I would expect
each project to include some if not all of the following:
·
Project proposal
·
Requirements planning
·
Benchmarking analysis
·
Selection of software,
hardware, and vendors
·
Periodic milestone
presentations and reports to classmates and instructor (milestones)
·
Reports and
presentations to management concerning systems recommendations
·
Policy and procedure
for development and usage
·
Coding as required
·
System implementation
·
Training and user
manuals
Evaluation:
Your grade for the
course will be determined by the following:
Assessment by the end
customer of your project: 50%
Milestone Reports and
presentations: 25%
Final Report and
presentation: 25%
TOTAL 100%
Peer Evaluation:
The prospect of
working in teams carries with it the possibility that not all team members will
pull their fair share of the load. For this reason, there will be anonymous
peer evaluations at the end of the semester. Individual evaluations are the
property of the instructor and will not be divulged to other team members -
your confidentiality is assured. The average of the peer evaluation scores
given to each team member can be used as a weight in determining the member’s
grade on the project work. Specifically, the instructor reserves the right to
use the evaluation to modify the team grade for individual members of the team.
Our
Clients:
For the spring of 2010,
you can choose from the following clients (given the class size this semester,
we will be undertaking only 3 projects this semester):
·

Potential other needs (only a representative sample):

--we must export current wine club member info into a new database
--new members must register online and be included directly in our email/text
message list

Developing a
website to automate the Peer Tutoring Program for the MCOB college counselors:
The current
process is as follows:
1) Potential
Tutors submit paper applications and are interviewed by me.
2)
Information for hired tutors is entered into an excel spreadsheet.
3) Students
complete a paper request for a tutor and their data is entered into the
spreadsheet.
4) Students
are manually matched with a tutor.
5) We pull
the schedules for the tutor and the student and schedule an initial meeting via
email.
6) Tutors
submit their hours on paper timesheets that have been signed by both the tutor
and student. Emails are sent bi-weekly reminding
students to submit hours.
7) The hours
are manually entered into the University payroll system and tracked as part of
the excel spreadsheet.
8) At the
end of the semester, we manually add the course grade and cum/term GPAs to the
spreadsheet to generate a series of reports for our annual report.
Additional
information on the program and the applications can be accessed through the
Undergraduate website at: http://business.nd.edu/Current_Students/Undergraduate_Students/Academic_Advising_and_Resources/Peer_Tutoring/

· Design a set of data tables that will allow our MCOB web group to automate the creation of the web sites with course requirement information for all the majors and tracks in the college.
This is database project normalization problem, with courses that appear in multiple majors, and a need to be able to intuitively manage courses as well as majors, as well as college-level requirements, etc. It’s basically a back-end system to dynamically manage how we present information to potential and current students about majors, required courses, etc.
· Develop a website for the Philadelphia fine chocolate and coffee house in South Bend
