Our Mission
The Center for the Study of Children is composed of a group of dedicated professionals
from the fields of pediatric medicine, developmental psychology, engineering, biology,
philosophy and child services with a common interest in issues of children's health and
development. We are committed to the view that the problems of children are complex and
are best pursued by interdisciplinary cooperation, study and action.
The mission of the Center is to:
1. PROMOTE DISCUSSION. Provide an environment that stimulates an exchange of ideas
relating to physical and behavioral development, disease, physiology, intervention and
medical ethics.
2. PROVIDE EDUCATION AND TRAINING. Develop formal courses, workshops, reading groups,
symposia and lectures for clinical staff, college faculty, students, child service
professionals and the public. These forums provide primary training, continuing education
and public awareness. Undergraduate students are also given educational and practical
exposure to children in a clinical setting by volunteering their service to Memorial
Hospital's units through the HUGS program.
3. SUPPORT RESEARCH. Coordinate and support basic and applied research dealing with
biological and behavioral aspects of child development. The primary goal of the research
is to promote more effective health care for children.
