Shaman carved from whale bone

A contemporary statue intricately carved by a Tlingit artist out of a fossilized whale rib, the face of walrus ivory inlaid with abalone and wearing authentic trade beads around the neck. He stands on a fossilized vertebrae. We found him in Ketchikan.

Traded for exotic products of the rainforest jungle from the16th through18th centuries by the Chinese, Borneo jars represent one of the most fascinating and highly valued heirlooms of the native tribes in Indonesia and Malaysian Borneo. These urns, intricately designed, also called "Dragon Jars," some dating from the Sung and Ming dynasties, even today are considered to be significant status symbols in the longhouses of Sarawak. Today they are sought by museums and private collectors, alike. These we bought in Kuching in Sarawak.

These paintings only represent a very small part of our large Will Sohl collection, some of them intricately connected to his private life.
