Locations and Descriptions
The Kellogg Institute for International Studies’ spring internship competition will offer opportunities with organizations in the United States, Africa, Asia and Latin America for summer 2012.
Several sites have internships in many locations. The Kellogg Institute will fund internships in the locations listed next to the organization name on Kellogg Institute internship web pages. If the location is not listed, we will NOT fund internships in that country.

International Sites – Africa
Ford Family Program in Human Development and Solidarity - Uganda
The Ford Program internship gives students the opportunity to be involved in community-based research that responds to the critical needs of people living in extreme poverty. Under the direction of the Ford Program and faculty at Uganda Martyr’s University (UMU), interns will work in the village of Nnindye, Uganda, together with students at UMU, community leaders, local government, and other stakeholders. The people of Nnindye are leading a holistic development effort in their community through projects focused on increasing agricultural productivity, improving access to basic health care, safe water, and education, and improving infrastructure that connects people to information and markets. Significant opportunities for interns to continue to be involved upon their return to campus will be available. The intern selected will work on a water/sanitation project and will have the opportunity to teach one class in a secondary school.

Foundation for Sustainable Development - Uganda, India
FSD supports the efforts of grassroots development organizations in the developing world that are working to better their communities, environments, and the economic opportunities around them. Internships are available in Jodhpur, India beginning June 16 and in Masaka, Uganda beginning May 19 or June 9. Applicants should have a background in human rights, economics, microfinance, law and political science as well as other areas of study. Students wishing to pursue an internship through this organization should see the website for specific details. Students should indicate on the Kellogg application the country and area of study where they would prefer to intern. Several positions are available with this organization. In order to receive Kellogg funding, students must apply through the Kellogg application as opposed to FSD’s application.

United Planet – Ghana
United Planet is an international non-profit organization that strives to create a world in which all people understand, respect, and support one another. United Planet's global network of leaders and volunteers fosters cross-cultural understanding and addresses shared challenges to unite the world in a community beyond borders. Our interns will work in Sokode, a small village in the south of Ghana, to assist the local people in realizing their village's development goals. These interns will work closely with the Chief of Sokode and his elders, on various projects that may include an overall development plan for the village, plans for a primary school building,
community health education or small business development. The work that the interns will do comes directly from the village. Those interested in this program must be able to work independently, adapt to new surroundings and cultures, have an open-minded and flexible approach to their work and be willing to live in basic conditions. Previous international experience is recommended.

Women in Progress/Global Mamas - Cape Coast, Krobo, and Accra, Ghana (West Africa)
Established by two returned Peace Corps volunteers, this non-profit and fair trade organization seeks to assist Ghanaian women in developing business skills and more effectively market their products. Projects available with this site include new product development, marketing, finance, business/management consulting, graphic design, fair trade education, computer and bookkeeping training. Interested applicants should possess an interest and/or experience in at least one of the following: graphic design, marketing, business management, fashion design, or web development. Applicants should have strong writing skills and an interest in Africa. To receive Kellogg funding, applicants must apply through the Kellogg application. Two internships are available with this organization.

The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) – Muhanga District, Rwanda
Two internships are available with this organization.
The YWCA is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that works at the grass roots level. It is a membership organization for women and young girls. It was established in Rwanda in February 1995, following the genocide and in response to the rising concern for the many widows and children left in its wake. The site is located in Muhanga one hour from Kigali.
Marketing Intern - The student will support the marketing team, taking responsibility for specific marketing campaigns and projects and assisting with marketing strategy of the YWCA.
Communication Intern - The intern will assist with writing and proofing publications. Responsibilities also include gathering and conveying information to program staff.
Fundraising Intern - The intern will research funding opportunities as well as write proposals. The intern will work closely with YWCA staff on these proposals.
