Graduate Student Grants

Dissertation Year Fellowships in International Studies fund advanced Notre Dame graduate students in the social sciences, history, philosophy, theology, and international human rights law. The fellowships are intended for students to do field research or to complete their dissertations.

Graduate Research Grants support Notre Dame graduate students involved in overseas (or, if demonstrably appropriate, in the United States), initial, short-term, exploratory research in international studies, addressing the thematic priorities of the Kellogg Institute. The grant should help to determine the viability and better define the scope of the proposed project. The fund is not intended to be a substitute for foundation support of research projects but instead to give first priority to promising pilot projects or to the research necessary to prepare externally competitive research proposals.

Quechua Summer Language Fellowships provide graduate students the opportunity to pursue the study of Quechua, the language of the Incas and of millions of indigenous peoples living in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Students attend classes at the Colegio Andino de Postgrado at the Centro de Estudios Regionales "Bartolomé de las Casas" (CBC) in Cusco, Peru. Classes are available at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Students participate in a 7-8 week study of the language and culture.

Kellogg PhD Fellowships aim to attract outstanding graduate students who have already been offered departmental fellowships in the Political Science, Sociology, Economics, or History departments at Notre Dame. To be eligible, a student must intend to devote their major doctoral field to the study of Latin America, Africa, and/or Asia. Students from any of these regions are also eligible regardless of field of study or discipline.

The Kellogg Institute will offer the supplemental fellowships for up to five years to qualified students. Recipients will receive $5,000 per year to supplement their departmental stipends. These funds will be disbursed in the fall and spring semesters. Fellowships are renewable annually for four additional academic years, contingent upon satisfactory progress toward the PhD.

The Kellogg Institute Professionalization Grant offers financial support for professional training that helps graduate students become better prepared to enter the academic workplace. This funding is intended to provide support that is not otherwise available through departments or other campus sources.

Support for Conference Travel. The Kellogg Institute recognizes the importance of academic conferences and acknowledges the financial barriers that graduate students may face in attending such conferences.
