Scott MainwaringMainwaring Discusses State of Democracy in Latin America

Kellogg Director Scott Mainwaring told the Brazilian newspaper Estado de São Paulo in a September 2011 interview that unequal rights, corruption, and weak institutions remain challenges to democracy in Latin America, in spite of tremendous strides made in the region.

In observance of the UN’s International Day of Democracy, the paper discussed the state of democracy around the world with three well-known political scientists representing Brazil, Europe, and the US.

Mainwaring, renowned for his work on democratization, particularly in Latin America, is the Eugene P. and Helen Conley Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame, where he also directs the Kellogg Institute for International Studies.

Also taking part in the interview were Jose Alvaro Moises, professor at the University of Sao Paulo and director of the Center for Public Policy Research (NUPPs), and Leonardo Morlino, professor at the University of Florence and president of the International Political Science Association (IPSA).
