The Fundamentals of Course Design Series (FoCD)

Description:

Designing your first course is a milestone in your academic career.  This three-part series focuses on the theory and practice of designing courses for enhancing student learning.  Participants will receive an introduction to the importance of thoughtful course design, suggestions for creating and evaluating well-defined goals, and best practices for constructing a syllabus.  Each workshop during the series will offer structured time for participants to reflect on their course goals, draft course design materials, and receive feedback.  As time is limited, direct feedback will also be available between workshops, if desired.  Participants who complete this three-part series will develop a solid framework for their course as well as learn the necessary tools for designing future courses.  To maximize this learning experience, we highly recommend that you attend all three sessions.  Registration will be capped at 15 participants.

FoCD1: Introduction to thoughtful course design and goal setting
This workshop is the first of a three part series and serves as an introduction to the importance of thoughtful course design and the creation of well-defined goals. This workshop will primarily consist of a guided discussion about course design and tips for creating well defined goals. Time will be allotted during the workshop for the development and discussion of goals for your specific course of interest. Attendees will be asked to share their goals and insight into thoughtful course design with others via a provided Fundamentals of Course Design blog after the workshop is complete. Your attendance at all three Fundamentals of Course Design workshops in the series is highly recommended. (See FoCD2 & FoCD3)

FoCD2: Assessment needed, tips for evaluating well-defined learning goals
The second workshop in the “Fundamentals of Course Design” focuses on the evaluation of well-defined learning goals. This session will begin with a brief discussion of well-defined goals as discussed in the first workshop followed by possible ways to assess these learning goals in a generic course. Participants will then work in groups to identify ways to evaluate and assess course specific goals. We anticipate that additional time may be needed outside of the workshop to identify appropriate methods for assessment of your specific learning goals. Similar to the first workshop, attendees will be asked to share and reflect on the workshop via the Fundamentals of Course Design blog. Your attendance at all three Fundamentals of Course Design workshops in the series is highly recommended. (See FoCD1 & FoCD3)

FoCD3: Bringing it all together, best practices for syllabus construction
The final workshop in the three part series will outline considerations and components of a learning-centered syllabus, incorporating the goals and assessment methods from the first two “Fundamentals of Course Design” workshops. Attendees will be given time to draft a syllabus for their course during the workshop. Following the workshop, participants will be asked to share and reflect on the three part series via the Fundamentals of Course Design blog. Individual follow-up sessions can be scheduled with Dr. Amanda McKendree at amckendree@nd.edu. Your attendance at all three Fundamentals of Course Design workshops in the series is highly recommended. (See FoCD1 & FoCD2)
