Diversity in the Classroom

Description:

This workshop will discuss instances in which student diversity (gender, race, religion, culture) can surprise an educator and affect the classroom. Together we will explore pathways through these scenarios and consider best and worst options for navigating situations when differences challenge our assumptions about teaching, learning, students, and ourselves.

After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • identify situations which may seem innocuous but which may adversely affect student learning
  • recognize how many types of diversity can impact teaching and learning
  • respond to these situations in ways that do not escalate conflicts or devalue students
