Grading Rubrics

Description:

When subjectivity is a factor in grading, it can be difficult to grade fairly. One may also have difficulty explaining why student work merited the grade that it received. Students require--to varying degrees--both fairness and informativeness in grading to keep them focused on improving their performance. Regular use of grading rubrics can also help instructors ask better (and easier to grade) questions, speed up the grading process and help students understand the expectations for each assignment. This workshop on grading rubrics will touch on designing grading rubrics for written essays/term papers as well as short examination questions.

Counts towards:

Learning Goals:

At the end of this workshop participants will:

  • Have written an effective rubric for one assignment/question.
  • Know the benefits of rubric use.
  • Be able to decide whether or not to release the rubric to students in advance of the assignment or exam.
  • Discern which type of grading rubric is most appropriate for desired evaluations
  • Design rubrics for their own courses

What to Bring:

Participants should arrive with an assignment/question in mind for which to write a rubric.
