Information for Those Attending
the Wakonse Conference
Clothes: The dress for the entire conference
is very casual: jeans, sweatshirts, sandals, tennis shoes are very
appropriate. Expect to get sand in all footwear. Plan on layering
your clothing. Jackets over sweatshirts for early morning and evening
wear, but be ready to peel off, one layer at a time, for the warmer
late morning and afternoon hours. The average daily high
for nearby Muskegon is around 69 and the low 49; but it can be
10 degrees cooler at the Lake. Check a local forecast ahead of
time.
Meals: There will be three substantive Camp meals
each day. They are served from a cafeteria line. If you have special
dietary needs (vegetarian, low fat, etc) please inform the Wakonse
staff before the conference.
Accommodations: You will share a dorm/cabin room
with a person from another institution. There will be two single
beds and small dressers. You will be furnished with soap, a towel,
wash cloth, sheets, a thin pillow and one wool blanket. You are
encouraged to bring a sleeping bag and sleep in
that. There are two women's and two men's rest rooms in each dorm;
each has two showers. Slippers/sandals are encouraged to keep sand
off your feet after showering. There is often not an abundance
of hot water, so you will want to stagger showers. A washer and
dryer are available. We will provide detergent for your use.
Chautauqua: Please consider coming prepared to
share your talents as musician, thespian, comic, or storyteller – or
be ready and willing to join or organize an ensemble.
Other Activities: During breaks at the conference,
you will have opportunities to enjoy hikes in the woods and through
the dunes, canoe on Stony Lake, or attend a Sunday non-denominational
service at the Chapel of the Dunes. There is also a grocery store
in town.
Smoking is not allowed on the premises of Camp
Miniwanca.
Telephones: Cell phones will probably not operate
on the camp grounds, but may work if you walk into town. A number
of pay phones are available at the camp. The emergency number for
Camp Miniwanca is 231-861-2262 - it is operative until 5 pm Michigan
time.
