Services to Academic Units
Besides working with individuals, the Kaneb Center is available
to work with departments, colleges and other academic units in projects such as a course redesign or grant proposal.
Listed below are examples of some of our past efforts in this
area.
Planning
In Biology and Accountancy, groups of faculty who teach sections
of a particular course asked us to meet with them as they planned
course revisions.
A group of language-teaching faculty formed an advisory committee
and asked us to facilitate its work of making recommendations
about language instruction at Notre Dame.
Presentations
We are happy to present workshops or host one-hour meetings for academic units. We have visited a number of department
meetings to discuss general issues of teaching and learning in
a specific discipline. We have also worked with college teaching committees and led or helped sponsor department-specific
workshops.
Consultation
For example, we met with the Anthropology department's untenured
faculty as a group for one hour and then with each individual
for one hour. During these meetings we discussed teaching, time
management and TCEs. The goal was to help faculty apportion time
between research and teaching and to develop teaching methods
that are time-efficient and that result in maximum student learning.
The College Council of the College of Business Administration
requested our help as the discussed ways of evaluating teaching
for promotion and tenure.
We have been involved with a variety of grants. Our role is
to help the investigators plan to assess student learning that
results from curricular or pedagogical innovations supported
by the grant.
We have met with serveral departments about evaluating student
learning for accreditation.
The Center also offers Individual
Consultations
