In 2002, the Chronicle of Higher Education called electronic portfolios “the next big thing” in higher education. Since that time, we have seen many universities establish ePortfolio systems to meet a variety of purposes, including career planning, learning through reflective writing, and assessment. They have implemented electronic portfolios using a variety of technology tools, ranging from customized software to existing course management systems to Web 2.0 tools (blogs, wikis). Dr. Helen Barrett will provide an introduction to these many purposes and strategies, including the range of tools that can be used for implementing electronic portfolios across the campus. Electronic Portfolios (see additional information)
An electronic portfolio documents a learner’s growth over time. It is organized around learning goals and uses computer technology to manage a collection of artifacts, such as papers, recommendations, creative work, and reflective essays. An electronic portfolio can serve multiple purposes, including career development, employment, and assessment. Research shows that well-designed portfolios represent important, contextualized learning that requires complex thinking and expressive skills.
