We held the meeting outside although it was slightly cold and overcast. Matt, Vance, Sean, and Lindsey were present. Matt and I goofed around with 6-club freestyle. Lindsey learned to bounce pass and also started on club passing. Vance gave a go at 3 knives.

I did the workshop/show in LaPorte. The place was really easy to find. It was only about a 45 minute drive. It went well. There was about a dozen kids and a dozen parents. I did juggling, unicyle, knives, torches, balancing, and some ball spinning. More diverse than I've done in the past. I fell really hard in the rolla bolla. That was uncool. I was mentally off-balance for the next 10 minutes or so. The kids ended up thinking the show was really fun. I tried to teach them some tricks. I had fun too.

News from a founder! Dave Laheist, one of the original members of our club contacted us. He still juggles but... IN JAPAN!! How cool is that? The name of his group is the Yokohama Big Street Performer's Club. Time for you to play, "Where's Dave":

Sorry everybody. I've been lax. I skipped out on the Thursday meeting and then I didn't send out an e-mail reminder for Sunday's meeting. I did however go to the Toss-Up festival: awesome.

For Sundays meeting, it was Lindsey, Sean, and myself again. The weather was beatiful and it's was a great day to be outside.

Sean and I did some 4 and 2-count force bounce passing with tennis balls. We also practiced various trick throws. Lindsey made a go at take-outs but her and I didn't quite pull it off. We'll try again.

Small meeting. It was me, Lindsey, and Sean. There were Indian drums.

This one got off to a slow start. Only Sean and I were there for the first half hour. But eventually Vance, Matt, Dan, and Lindsey made appearences. For the most part we played around with different 6-person passing configurations. More fun was had than success. We ended the meeting by goofing around with endurance contests and some games of Simon Says.

Will winter ever yield to Spring?

Besides myself, Sean showed up. So the Thursday meetings are growing! ;-)

We made tons of progress though. Sean learned a huge number of things: under-the-leg while passing, 7-ball passing, 6-ball 3-count, 6-ball left hand passing, and more. I learned how throw solo tricks like under-the-leg and behind-the-back while passing. Very important stuff that I've so some reason never figured out until now. It was way, way overdue.

It was a small meeting today perhaps because of the cold weather or perhaps because I sent out a late reminder. But it was nice for me because I got to work on some stuff that I usually don't because I'm too busy helping others learn. Only Matt, Sean, Lindsey, and myself were present.

Matt and I worked on 441, 531, back-to-back, and 7-club passing and on some passing tricks like the "spin-around through-the-legs pass". Back-to-back is giving us a lot of trouble. It's hard. Sean, Matt, and I did an elevated feed where Matt stood on top of some mats and Sean was beneath him as I posted. Towards the end we all got an "N" going. Hopefully it will be warmer on Thursday so we can be outside.

Friday, Mar 28, 2003, Performance!

by Jason Quinn

Phew! Just got done my second "show" although it is probably more accurate to call it a demonstration. I'm happy to report it went perfect! No drops and the people were impressed.

A professor in my department asked me earlier this week if I would be willing to juggle for one of his Introductory physics classes. He had been using another student I know for the last couple of years. Somehow he was unaware that I juggled. Anyway, he asked and I said yes. The "lesson" was about center-of-mass although he confessed he just wanted something to spice things up a little.

I worked with 3-5 balls spending most of my time with 3, then I did some 3 club work before we went outside so I could do 3 torches. For the grand finale I tossed a torch to the professor who caught it. We had worked this out and practiced it ahead of time.

I cut my four and five ball tricks short because, as always when I "perform", I started shaking a little bit and I figured that a little bit without drops is better than a lot with them. Another thing that made it more challenging was that it was very early for me. I am a night owl and I started juggling at 10:40am whereas I usually don't get up until noon. (I know I live a rough life.) The blood just wasn't pumping quite the way that it should be.

The weather almost didn't allow me to try the torches. It was threatening to rain and the wind was strong. I had trouble getting the things lit with matches. So, what I ended up doing was going inside the building and getting them started there. I came out carrying them Olympic-torch style which was funny.

Lastly, I cut myself somehow during the show but I don't know how or when. Life is strange like that.

Where was everybody? I was the only person to show up. I left a little early around 5:30. There isn't much to report. Learned 4-ball frontcross-like trick.

This is why I like juggling. What a perfect day! The sky was blue and it was warm but not hot. We had a good turnout too. Let me see if I can remember everybody: Sean, Paul, Matt, Steve, Lindsey, Vance, Patrick, Dan, and myself. Two girls, Molly and Ellen, I think it was, stopped by and I got them started a little bit with 3 balls. They said they'd be back next week. We'll see.

We continue to improve and make progress. Lindsey's starting to get 3 clubs down pretty solidly. Steve made some decent attempts at 441 both stand alone and while passing. I managed to get some 531 passing going. Adding siteswaps to passing finally "clicked". I'm anxious to try some more in the future and but with clubs. Steve and I also tinkered with 8-ball passing. We had some success but it needs work.

In other news, Matt and I got invited to juggle fire before a physics class so the professor can make some lesson out of center-of-mass motion stuff. Should be fun.

Joe, Sean, Lindsey, Dan, and myself were present. We did a few new things. Sean, Joe, and I found out how to spin as the post. We also learned to do basic line passing. Mucho fun. Later, Lindsey and I worked on some passing and I managed to figure out 441 passing. It's easy once you know what to do.

Feb 23, 2003, Racketball Court #7

by Jason Quinn

Another meeting of the die-hards: Matt, Dan, Lindsey, Shir and myself. We all learned a lot though. Dan and I did some more 1-count (aka ultimates) with balls. Then Lindsey and Shir both learned 2-count and 3-count! Very impressive. We didn't stop there either. We went on to get a 4-person typewriter feed going -- at least I think that's what it's called. All in all a very productive meeting.

by Jason Quinn

Where was everybody? Only Matt, Shir, Lindsey and myself showed up. Not even Dan came! Oh well, we had a good time anyway. Matt and I practiced PPS and 1-count 2-count passing. It went okay but it still needs some work. We tried volleyball juggling this week. This was very fun. This will hopefully become a staple at future meetings.

I'm hoping for a better turnout next week. See you then.

Pretty ruitine meeting. Vance made his first appearance since we were outdoors. We got him up to speed with ball passing. John continued to improve. Others present were myself, Matt, Lindsey, Dan, and Shir.

We were in the Racketball Court #7 again this week. It appears as though we are stuck there for the rest of the winter. Oh well.

We're currently having some trouble with the e-mail account. Forgive us if you get any spam...

Jan 26, 2003, Racketball Court #7

by Jason Quinn

Yuck! We met in the Racketball Court this week. It's loud, it's overly bright, and it's hot. I originally got Rm 301 but was kicked out by the pom-pom club. Something needs to be done about the room. If you were wondering, I got to see the lights in 301. They are new but of the same type as the old ones.

The attendance was decent. Besides myself, Shir, Paul, John, Sean, Lindsey, and Dan were there. That's about the most that the Racketball Court #7s comfortably handle, so it worked out okay. Mostly we played with passing and a couple of people learned to post. We had a three-ball endurance contest, which came down to John versus Sean. As was the rules, after a while we started calling out tricks. John won on a reverse cascade call.

I'm going to try to get the club a LISTSERV list. We'll see what happens.

Joe

by Jason Quinn

This week we meet in Rm 219 instead of 301. We were denied permission to use our regular room by the attendant at the front desk. Try and guess which of the following was the reason:

  1. We've been damaging the floor.
  2. The room has new expensive lights.
  3. Another club reserved it and even if they aren't there we can't use it.

Did you pick B? If you did, you're correct! Expensive lights. Can you believe that? The ceiling is a trillion feet high. How would we break them? I haven't seen them yet but when I do, I hope the room is lit by glowing magical fairies imprisoned in jars.

We had a decent turnout from the regulars. We all were a little out of practice and recouperating from break. Dan showed off his new set of five silicones that Santa brought him. Sweet! We had a new member, John, show up. I taught him the right and left 4-count patterns and the 3-count.

Lindsey brought in the pictures she took on the 15th before we left. She got a good shot of Joe as seen at left, and an interesting one of Matt and I practicing our back-to-back passing. I'll let it speak for itself. Click here.

The club had a first today. This was the first meeting that a non-student attended (well, excepting Mark Nizer and some other oddities). Paul, a juggler with an interest in clowning showed up after hearing about the club from a Fun F/X employee. I got him started with some passing and gave him some ideas for tricks to work on. He did a great job and hopefully we'll see him again in the future.

I almost went the Rolf's Gym instead because it was closer and it was so cold outside. I was nearly sure that I'd be the only attendee. But something told me to make sure I was at the Rock... It's a good thing I listen to myself! ;-).
