Fall 2002

This semester's meetings ended with a whimper. But overall it was a pretty darn good one for the juggling club. I hope it continues into the new year. For the last meeting, only Lindsey, Joe, Matt, and myself were there. Lindsey partipated in her first feed (4-person nonetheless) and took some pictures. Matt and I continued to work on our back-to-back passing after Joe and Lindsey had left. It's more difficult than I had at first suspected it would be but we are starting to get the hang of it. We ended on a run of 5 good passes, which was great considering 3 was our previous record.

We had a very good meeting except that Mike was missing this week. I'm worried that he might be losing interest. (Stay with it, Mike. You'll get it.). Otherwise, I'm proud to report that all of our die-hard members can now pass balls! Some of the highlights of the meeting were Shir, Joe, and I getting a feed down. Lindsey has the six ball passing pattern down solid. Congratulations to her. This week's MAJ (Most Amazing Juggler) Award goes to Dan, who was kicking passing-butt. In a span of 15 minutes, Dan learned the 2-count, left-handed 4-count, the 3-cound, and 7 balls!

A person named Chusma has contacted me and wants to start visiting the club. If he/she ends up coming it will be our first outside member! The club is strong. Long live the club.

We had low turn-out this meeting but we learned a lot. Steve and I successsfully worked on back-to-back passing and 7 balls. Matt and I did some 7 club passing.

Bumped into an MIA member, Joe, on the way back home. He said he would try to make it to the next meeting.

Dan made the Scholastic for his fire breathing. They interviewed him and another firebreather who are together called the Zahm brothers. Dan was nice enough to give the Juggling Club not one but *two* plugs in the interview. Way to go, Dan!

I survived the performance! It went okay. I had more drops that I would have liked. There was a lot of commotion. The kids were very active. I learned a lot of things about what to do the next time. For example, music has to be up louder than the kids. I should have had somebody controlling the sound besides myself.

Lindsey did a great job with her juggling history segment. She's really good with kids. She had them pretending to be continents and jugglers and holding up signs. They enjoyed it.

Shir and I did some passing. Considering he has only tried passing a couple of times before it went well. By this point the kids were all over the place, and it didn't matter what happened.

In all, it was a learning experience well worth the time.

We were in Rm 301. We did a lot of passing this time. Our members are starting to get pretty good. A new guy named Kevin showed up and said he'll try to make future meetings.

My first "gig" is coming up. I hope it goes well.

This was the first indoor meeting of the year. We were in Rm. 219, which is quite loud. Lindsey started to be able to pass. So did Shir. Towards the end of the meeting we watched To be the Best.

On a personal note, I just (Nov 7) got 10 catches of 9 balls. Yippee!

I think everybody had a pretty fun time today. It was photo day! We were taking photos galore! They are already developed and some of them are on the pictures page. Sadly, my thumb appears in half of the pictures I took. I will have to do this again some other time. If your pictures isn't there it's because I haven't had time to put it up yet or your picture didn't turn out.

To say the air was crisp at the meeting would be an under-statement. It was cold and you had to keep moving not to notice it. My guess is that this will be the last outdoor meeting of the Fall. We had a good turn-out dispite the temperature. It started with only 3 die-hards but later a dozen or more members were there. Chris D'Andrea made his debut appearance. I took some time out to learn the diabolo.

Ok. Award time... let me think... I know: This week Bonnie gets the highly-prized BDJ (Best Dressed Juggler) Award! Her ensemble consisted of a pretty purple and rusty-red sweater with matching, velvety shoes. Look here. Not sure if I would have worn these shoes on wet ground... not that I would wear women's shoes in the first place, uh, never mind...

Holy shizzle-nizzle! The Scholastic actually did publish the photo of us!! I'm amazed. It looks pretty good too. I'm happy with it. If you'd like to see a more psychodelic version, click here.

This was a perfect day for juggling! If you missed out on this meeting, you missed a good one. Although many of us were weary from celebrating the Irish's victory over Stanford, we enjoyed a very laid back time talking and occasionally throwing stuff. This weeks' MVJ Award goes to Dan! Congratulations on the passing! We also met Vance who joined us for the first time. This week's OMJ (Obviously Missing Juggler) Award goes to Shir. Tsk, tsk, tsk!

The interested-media party this week was a film crew who were shooting some guys sitting on top of the roof of one of the dorms for 50 hours. They started filming us without asking and then never introduced themselves... hmph!

Lindsey showed us her new beach-ball style beanbags. She had like 6 or 7 of them. Awesome! That's what I like to hear!

See you folks next week.

It was a smaller turnout than usual this week. Only a handful of people showed up. The weather wasn't the best, it was humid and damp from an early morning rain. We took a break from juggling for a while and played some footbag. But before that, we debated if "footbag" was the proper name for it. A quick flash of my World Footbag Association lifetime membership card settled the issue. Other than that, we also did some passing. Steve and I worked on seven clubs and a six-club 3-count. On a more personal note, I mananged to flash 9 with four witnesses present. Woo-who!

Let's see, this week's MVJ Award goes to......drumroll...... the military helicopters that flew overhead during the meeting. What was the deal with that? Certainly interesting to watch however.

Lastly, the Scholastic failed to publish the pictures that they took of us at the last meeting -- and thus the saga continues. I think we ought to take pictures of *them* and say we'll put them in future segments of "Juggling News". Of course, we'd never put them here and we could laugh maniacally about it for the rest of our lives. That would show 'em!

Our third official get-together and things are still going strong. We ended up juggling outside after all because it cleared and dryed up. The members are starting to get to know one another and our newbies are becoming bonafide jugglers. This week's MVJ (Most Valuable Juggler) Award goes to Lindsey, who can now demonstrate a 3 cascade!

The meeting was fairly ruitine consisting of mostly passing practice. Dan brought a set of real bowling pins. Of course we all had to try 'em. We only had one minor injury which isn't so bad. Don't try to catch bowling pins with your feet next time, Matt. :-)

The big question from this meeting is, "Will the Scholastic publish the photographs they took of us"? I say that they might because my butt was in the pictures. How could they not be publishable? C'ya next week!

Really good meeting. We had over a dozen solid members show up and the beginners, Lindsey, Mike, and Sean, showed good progress. Didi and Patrick, where were you this week? Pat Mousaw made it to the meeting. He helped me with my seven clubs and we even tried some back to back passing. Shir continued to impress everybody with his rapid improvement and gets this week's "Least Daunted by Super-Hard Trick" Award. Steve, Matt, and myself had some great fun messing around with the "Kit-Kat Trick" right after we were close to cracking our skulls open on the Rola Bola. Spencer took photos of us. I wonder if we'll we get dissed by the Observer again. Anywho, lots-a fun! See y'all at the next meeting!

The informal meeting got off a little slow this week. It was just me for a while. Once Matt showed up, we got some good 6-club 4-count practice. At one point a guy named Dave from eastern Ohio started talking to us and as it turns out he was a pretty good passer. We managed to get a feed going with some tricks.

We have a couple of very nice images by Lisa Ramirez of us doing our thing. The files are quite large.

  1. Picture - Good shot of Matt and I passing 6 clubs.
  2. Picture - A trick! Here comes an under the leg pass coupled with a really goofy look.

The first official club meeting of the year! We had a pretty good turnout: nearly 20 people! It was almost too good because the props were running low. The skill levels of the newcomers spanned from absolute newbies to decent passers -- not too shabby. We had one bonafide natural -- congratulations to Shir on picking up the 3-cascade lightning-quick. In addition, we got a handful of the "I can do 3"-type people started with ball passing. Didi scored this week's prestigious "Most Excitable" Award. And to round things out there were some good passers there too. By the end of the meeting Matt, Steve, and myself were getting a respectable rotating 3-person feed going.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was the appearance of a guy named Bertram, who could bounce and spin all over the place on the unicycle. He showed me how to go backwards but I don't know if I'll ever get around to learning that.

All in all, a good solid start with some friendly folks. The photo editor for the school newspaper showed up and took some pictures at the end of the club while we were passing. Time will tell if they actually publish one.

I hope to see everybody again next week!

What a great day! Purdue was once again at Notre Dame Stadium with a chance to beat the blue and gold for the first time in like 27 years or something. They've come close in the last few years; and although they put up a good fight again this time, we still got 'em.

Home football games are nearly twice as exciting for me as for many fans because one of my favorite juggling buds, Pat Mousaw, is a loyal alumni who tries to make it each home game. *And* he likes to juggle before the games. So, I went down to meet him at the ungodly time of 9:30am on Saturday to pass with the master. Matt Winter was also there and was doing pretty good with a 7-club passing pattern. A good time was had by all. The heat however was a little unbearable. It took a lot of energy from us. Lesson: bring water.
