Joshua D. Shrout, Ph.D.

Prior to arriving at Notre Dame, I was a post-doc with Matt Parsek in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington where we studied bacterial community processes, namely the development of attached-growth biofilms and cell-to-cell communication (called quorum sensing). Before joining Matt's lab I completed my Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering with Gene Parkin at the University of Iowa.

Previous to my Ph.D., I worked as a consultant on a variety of projects including: the design of industrial wastewater treatment systems, overseeing UST removals, overseeing Title 5 air permit testing, and investigating for asbestos.

Outside the lab, I enjoy running, listening to jazz, reading mystery novels, and spending time with my wife and kids.
