Joint
Exemplification
Joint exemplification occurs
when many things work together to
exemplify a relation. For example, my wife and I jointly exemplify the relation
of married to. There isn’t a distinct
relation here from good old-fashioned exemplification. It’s just that when we
say that the exemplification relation holds between a plurality of things and a relation, we want to be careful not to
suggest that the exemplification relation holds between each member of the plurality and the relation
in question. So I use the term, ‘joint exemplification’, to make it clear that
the relation is holding between one and many
as opposed to one and each of the
many.
