What follows is a guide to some of the more significant holdings related to wrestling in the University Libraries of Notre Dame. Its purpose is to provide researchers with a convenient overview of available resources in this subject area; it does not aspire to be comprehensive. Some types of materials, including virtually all monographs and some annual and periodical titles, are included in the University Libraries Online Catalog, and may be found in various locations throughout Hesburgh Library, as detailed on the individual catalog record. Other materials, including some annuals and periodicals and most yearbooks, media guides, programs, and special collections, have no catalog records; these items are held in the Rare Books Unit of the Department of Special Collections, 102 Hesburgh Library. Such items may be consulted in the reading room of the Department, from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. weekdays. Researchers interested in materials specifically pertaining to the history of wrestling at Notre Dame should contact University Archives, 607 Hesburgh Library.

Special Collections

• The Jack Pfefer Wrestling Collection, donated to the University of Notre Dame by Eddie M. Einhorn, comprises over 100 cubic feet of materials accumulated by professional wrestling promoter Jacob (Jack) Pfefer (1894-1974) over his 45-year career. Pfefer was a central figure in the history of professional wrestling in the second quarter of the twentieth century; he was particularly influential during the era when the game made a definitive break with any competitive premise, and became pure theater. Types of materials especially well represented in the collection include business and financial records, personal correspondence, photographs, posters and broadsides, newspaper and magazine clippings, and wrestling periodicals and programs. All Pfefer materials are located in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, 102 Hesburgh Library.
