Behavioral and Social Environment:

The indicators in this section document young people’s participation in illegal or high-risk behaviors, such as smoking, drinking alcohol, illicit drug use, and engaging in serious violent crimes. According to a recent report by the Urban Institute, the percentage of high school students engaging in multiple risk-taking behaviors declined during the 1990s, but the trend for Latino teens was in the opposite direction.

The percentage of Latino students who regularly participated in five or more risk behaviors increased nearly 50 percent during the past decade, especially for 9th and 10th grade Latino students. Indicators of alcohol use (8th & 10th grades), illicit drug use, marijuana ever used, suicide attempts, and weapon carrying among Latino teens were all higher than for non-Latino whites or the teen population as a whole.
