Background In the spring of 2005, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College and the Inter-University Program for Latino Research hosted the first national Conference on the Assessment and Valuation of Puerto Rican, Chicano, Latino and Hispanic- Caribbean Art. Due to the success of the 2005 event, Centro and IUPLR along with The Chicano Studies Research Center at UCLA, The Americas Society, El Museo del Barrio, and El Taller Boricua, will host the Latino Art Now! Conference on January 31- February 2, 2008 at the College School of Social Work and the Americas Society in New York City. Download Conference Program (PDF)

| Panel presentations at the conference will focus on: | ||||
Panel 1: Latino Art from its Production to Consumption This introductory panel will explore the elements of the Latina/o art world. Artists, activists, curators, gallerists, critics and scholars will discuss the interdependence of disciplines and practices to the vitality of Latino arts today. |

Panel 2: The Dissemination, Publication and Archiving of Latino Art: Print and Media This past decade has seen a burgeoning of scholarly initiatives to recover and document the forms and content of Latina/o art among them Documents of 20th Century Latin American and Latino Art, A Digital Archive and Publications Project at the Museum of Fine Arts-Houston; A Ver: Revisioning Art History at the University of California Los Angeles; The Midwest Latino Arts Documentary Heritage Project at the University of Notre Dame, and METRO-MoMA Survey of Archives of Latino and Latin American Art at the Museum of Modern Art. Panelist will discuss how these projects and recent publications are articulating new narratives of art in the United States. |

Panel 3: The Origins and New Horizons of Migration, Diáspora and Exile Latina/o art is complex and layered and it is related both to national histories and transnational circuits. The tropes and categories of migration, diaspora, and exile will be examined through paradigms of gender, class, race, nation and homeland. |

Panel 4: Intersections: US Latino Art and Artists and Latin American and US Contemporary Art In the global moment territorialities are in flux an artists operate in multiple localities. This panel will address such questions as where and under what circumstances are Latina/o artists making connections to Latin American, European and U.S. contemporary art. |

Panel 5: Cultural Brokers, Curators and New Venues A discussion of galleries and internet sites dedicated to Latina/o art that have emerged in the past decade. |

Panel 6: Markets: Collecting and Collections In its mature phase, Latina/o art is entering the marketplace. Collectors and appraisers will relate their experiences in this emerging field and market. |

| Panel 7: Latino Printmaking: Preserving the Heritage, Advancing Its Future Viability | ||||
This panel will explore the state of Latino printmaking and the role of the Consejo Gráfico, an independent national network of Latino print workshops. The Consejo celebrates the legacy and vibrancy of Latino printmaking by preserving the critical activism that was central to its emergence. |
