The generosity of Ireland Council members made it possible to offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience to six rising seniors in the Summer of 2010. Claire Brosnihan did legal research at the Equality Tribunal through the Department of Justice. Paul Dechant interned with the curator of the Irish Film Institute. Erica Pepitone gained first-hand publishing experience with the literary journal Poetry Ireland. Rochelle Rieger served as a Press Liaison for the Press Office of the Department of Foreign Affairs. Amanda Springstead lent her expertise to the Therapeutic Riding School and Equine Assisted Learning Programs at Festina Lente. Finally, Joanna Thurnes worked in the Education Department at the National Gallery of Ireland.

Each year up to six Notre Dame juniors receive an internship based on their intellectual passions, individual expertise and career ambitions live and work in Dublin, Ireland. You do not need to be in either Irish Studies or Irish Language and Literature classes to be considered for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Regardless of your course of study, if you are a junior at the University, you are encouraged to apply.

We are always looking for new ideas, and the locations and assignments for interns are always changing. So, whether there is a track record in a specific interest or activity, or you have a unique idea tailored to your specific personal interests and professional goals, your proposal for a Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies internship could become a reality this summer.

Details

The internships last for seven weeks each summer. All students are under the guidance of an internship coordinator in the Keough-Naughton Notre Dame Centre, Dublin. Internship includes:

• Round-trip airfare from United States to Ireland
• Living allowance for seven-week stay
• Exposure to Irish culture through a variety of experiences

Accommodations in Dublin

Interns will live at UCD Summer Residences ideally located close to Dublin’s city centre and within easy reach of the cities many amenities. UCD is just a short 10 minute bus ride to the city centre via a direct route. Its superb location, just on the edge of town on a lovely green-field campus provides easy access to an abundance of restaurants, as well as Dublin’s attractive coastline and the Wicklow mountains. Onsite facilities include a pharmacy, medical centre, banks, post office, delicatessens, newsagent, gym, laundrette and mini-markets.

The apartments are spacious and fully furnished to a high standard. There are 6 single en-suite bedrooms in each apartment. All accommodation has self-catering facilities, including kitchen, laundry and a separate living room.

Although a number of internships are reserved for undergrads pursuing a minor in either Irish Studies or Irish Language and Literature, applications for a Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies internship will be enthusiastically accepted from any ND junior, regardless of college. • Academic recommendation signed and sealed from a Notre Dame faculty member that provides a detailed assessment of your qualifications to intern abroad.
• Official copy of your transcript sealed from the Registrar.
