Government of Ireland Scholar

The innovative Government of Ireland program, announced by Minister for Rural, Community and Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív on his last visit to Notre Dame, places promising Irish language graduate students as teachers in colleges and universities around the world. The 2008-2009 Government of Ireland scholar is Cork native Mary O’Callaghan, who comes to Notre Dame after her studies at University College Cork and Mary Immaculate College of Education.

Peadar Ó Muircheartaigh, a native of Kiltimagh in East Mayo, was the 2007-2008 Government of Ireland scholar. He studied Modern Irish and Legal Studies in NUIG for a BA degree and graduated with a first in Modern Irish. At the moment he is finishing a thesis for an MA in Old and Middle Irish from the same university on the problem of the word initial h- in Old Irish orthography. During his year here he will be working on a new edition and translation of stories collected by Douglas Hyde from Kiltimagh native Tomas Ó Cathasaigh. Ó Muircheartaigh has a strong interest inmost academic aspects of the Irish language and especially in folklore, dialectology, Scottish Gaelic and Manx languages.
